Was just a coincidence that I happened to be going into the site as it was coming up. The pictures were awesome, as always!! I had so many favorites today, that it didn't even pay to mention which ones I liked, lol!!

Okay, since I'm not as smart as FRNash, my hero, I can't post a picture of the little buck I saw early this morning. So, it's now on my profile picture. Also got a picture of a pileated woodpecker. Can't show that either. Charlie, why do you make it so hard to post a picture. Okay, I'll get a lot of responses out of that question but I've gotten thick-skinned since I moved UP here. :) Also, about the cougar in Ontonagon, you can't assume you'll be safe if you don't live here. You need to be prepared when you walk in those deep woods. Getting much needed rain, again.

Cougars, Mountain Lions, whatever you want to call them are being sighted all over Eastern Iowa. None have been reported to be harming anything or anyone. They have stirred up the *drama queens and kings* though! The D.N.R. purposely released them a few years back.
By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 - 05:10 pm:
Janie, sorry, but Iowa sure ain't the UP.
By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 - 05:13 pm:
I know that, but a U.P. Cougar doesn't mean they are anymore dangerous than an Iowa one.

Janie, get real.
Nancy, the leaves are turning, should be a good painted landscape for you.

I'd be more afraid of a rutting bull moose or a wolverine than a mountain lion anywhere in North America. I've had the misfortune of running into both while working in Northern Quebec; not something I want to experience again......

Having grown up in rural areas and having spent a fair bit of my career working in the field in remote areas all over the world, I have come to respect animals in their habitats. Whether in the far north, in the realm of the polar bear; in the American West, home of grizzlies, mountain lions, and wolves; or in Africa, where hippopotami kill many people, I have learned it is important to respect the animals and be aware of my surroundings. Even in cities and suburbia, it is important to be aware and intelligent of my surroundings and actions. I think it is a telling fact that in all my time working in the field, an animal has placed me in a life and death situation only once. (As related on yesterday’s What’s Up page). People, both in the city and the wilderness, have placed me in life or death situations six times.
I’ll be honest, I find that mountain lions in the U.P. is a good sign. The habitat of the mountain lion prior to extermination efforts by people was throughout the lower forty-eight United States. The return of them to the U.P. is an indication of the forests returning to a natural ecosystem.
By the way, I am curious, are there any peer-reviewed scientific journal articles documenting that U.P. mountain lions are more dangerous than ones in Iowa, Colorado, Montana, etc. As a scientist who often works in areas inhabited by mountain lions, I am curious about this hypothesis.

Dr. Nat, The Iowa DNR released cougars as you mentioned to help balance the eco system here. If you do hear an answer to the hypothesis of the behavior of a U.P. cougar/mountain lion vs. one from Iowa, Illinois, Colorado, Montana, or any of the other states, I share your interest!

Isn't it true that, unless they're extremely hungry, or provoked, they are probably more frightened of you than you are of them.

All this talk about cougars and panthers reminds me of Jeremiah Johnson: "That Hatchet Jack was a wild one. He was living with a female panther. Two years in a cave up in the Musselshell. She never did get used to him."

Hollidays (Hollybranches): Is the email address in your profile correct? I tried to send you an email yesterday, but it failed with the following message:
Quote:
"Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:
<email address as shown in your profile>
Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain."
FRNash, just sent myself an email from another account to make sure the one in my profile was working. It is. I can give you my other addy through maybe facebook if you belong??? Been wanting to get a hold of you but your email address is pretty mind boggling. :)

Sorry, no facebook for me. The email address as shown in my profile is designed to foil those nasty automated critters that wander the web harvesting email addresses.
Just 'copy' the two portions in black text from my profile and paste them into into your email program with an '@' sign in between (ignore both the red and blue portions entirely. The result should be what you need.
