Thank you Pasty Central, Pasty Cam, Charlie, Mary and everyone who comments. When I can't be in the U.P., this gives me a window that makes my day. 3 weeks from tomorrow, I'll be back for a little bit. Hope to see colors.

I plan to enjoy this Labour Day by doing something I haven't been able to do in 4 months...... willingly go outside and sit in my Adirondack chair with a nice glass of sweet ice tea!! ;-)

Good slideshow. Sacred Heart Church's original building came to sad conclusion in August 1983.

The 1998 picture reminds me of a fairly recent visit
to the Fort. I was told the true story of Fannie
Hooe. The story, or legend, we were told as
children long ago was much more in keeping with our
longing for the mystery and romance of history,
especially our local history.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JUDY! HOPE YOU'RE HAVING A GREAT DAY!

I have a question. Does anybody know about a fountain, on the side of the road, between Calumet Waterworks and McLain State Park?

By Tom (Tom) on Monday, September 5, 2011 - 09:34 pm:

Yes, there was a fountain between Waterworks and McLain State Park. I drove by just a week ago and saw the pile of stones left over from that fountain.
I don't know if it still seeps water. We thought, as kids, it was a spring at the side of the road.
That road has been straightened out a bit from years past. Our fun was driving that stretch as fast
as we dared when we were teenagers. That and the curvy road just out of South Range were our favorites. Tires would screech and we thought that was pretty cool.

First day of school in Michigan

By Dale Beitz (Dbeitz) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 12:50 pm:

The two best "driving escapades" I recall from my college days at MTU are these. During the warm months, whenever we went up Brockway we'd always come down the "south" side (opposite Copper Harbor). The goal was to get started down the hill, then put the car in neutral and coast all the way down if we could. Depending on the car and number of passengers, sometimes we'd make it, and sometimes we'd have to put it back in gear to finish.
The winter activity was what we referred to as "ascending Mount Agate". Agate street is in Houghton and heads up the hill behind town. My friend had a early 70's Chrysler Newport, rear wheel drive. We'd start at the base in town and head up the hill as far as we could before the tires spun out and we couldn't get any farther. Once the snow set it, there weren't too many times we'd make it.
