This tunnel was featured on the Pasty Cam awhile back, 10 years plus, to be exact, on March 30, 2001, but instead of sand and water in the tunnel there was snow at that time. Because of that 2001 photo, I knew where this was, but until a few weeks ago, I had never had the opportunity to check it out myself. These are two "box culverts" that run beneath the road at Great Sand Bay. In fact, they're right where the new parking area and stairway to Lake Superior are, but if you didn't know they were there, you'd never suspect. You just never know what interesting things you'll find when you get out there and explore the Keweenaw.

We were just there about a month ago, great beach, the water is a bit cold for most of the adults but the kids love it. Would like to see a picture of those culverts during spring run off.

Looks like a cool place to explore and I could definitely use that. Seems like I have been going non-stop at work for months, but I'm not complaining.

Mary, you answered my question....when I saw the opening photo at the beginning, I thought I remembered seeing that 'tunnel' on pasty before, and I was gonna ask. One of those places where you just 'ride right over'.:) BTW, in the next to last photo it looks like "Bigfoot" dragging a caber in the background, at least that's what my old eyes see. ;-D

I knew where those were right away, but hadn't thought about them in many, many years - since the last time my brothers and I tried to "dam up" Owl Creek with sand and driftwood.

Will definitely have to check this out. I knew I'd seen the picture before too, but forgot about it.
I love Great Sand Bay but, honestly, the water is much warmer on the other side of the island. Don't know why, but it always is. So, as much as I love the scenery on this side, given the chance, I would live on the Lac LaBelle side, around Little Betsy!! My ex-in-laws have a cabin up there, and the water is almost always much warmer than it is on the other side of the island.

When you look down those steps to the beach, it looks like a long ways down, but it really is not a long way down there, just a longggggg way back up..
