People always talk about the weather here UP North and its ability to change so quickly. Part of that phenomenon is the cloud cover and whatever way the wind is blowing that day. Frederic W. Koski has three photos for us today, that give us a lesson in nephology. That's the study of clouds, for those of you that don't know. ;->
Frederic starts with the puffy white kind, set against a beautiful blue sky... with an added bonus of an eagle flying on the edge of the cloud on the right. Then he treats us to darker side of the sky over Lake Superior. Ominous looking, but beautiful still. And finally, his last shot with banks and banks of clouds, flowing out over the Big Lake, looking like they go on forever.
This concludes your lesson for today... nothing too taxing or technical, just beautiful. Enjoy...

WOW!! That 2nd picture's amazing. Not that they're not all awesome, but it really looks like a storm brewing in the 2nd one. Thanks, Fred!!! And thanks, Mary, wouldn't want to tax our brains just too much!!

Superior cloud pictures today! One of my favorite sights snowmobiling the U.P. is watching Lake Effect snowstorm clouds move in!

Hi With the uninterrupted horizon on the shores of lake Huron, it's neat the way we can see weather occurring over miles. This allows us to say stuff like "Looks like it's raining over on the island" (Bois Blanc) or "I don't like the way the sky looks up at Mackinaw" and "Get out of the water and get up to the cabin, the rain is coming across the lake!"

Fantastic pics...LOVE the cloud action we get to see....and when it's over the lake...it seems like you can just see forever......

I wanted to share this email:
HI all;
I wanted to let people know that there is a Friends of the Poor walk on Friday, Sept. 23, from 3-5 p.m., starting in Agassiz Park and going through Calumet. There will be a booth near the "Farmer's Market"....with refreshments. We are encouraging people to either consider walking and getting pledges, or contributing in any small way. Our little conference makes home visits to area people that are struggling to pay some of their essential bills, such as heat, power, water, medical, food. We don't have a store, but do everything through volunteer service.
All monies received stays in our local conference. If you care to sponsor one of the walkers in this walk, that would be great. If you can't at this time, keep in mind that we are here, if you know people that may need some help.
Our address is:
Sts. Martha and Mary St. Vincent de Paul P.O.B. 546 Calumet, MI 49913
Thanks Much.

Awesome sky pix! Wonder if that's an eagle flying in the first photo? Kathyl, your description of the "uninterrupted horizon on the shores of Lake Huron" sounds a lot like the almost 'treeless' wide open plains of North Dakota. We could always see the weather coming. Only place we've lived where the weather forecasters were almost always right....hard to miss when it's in 'plain' view. ;)

Hmmm, I wonder if that eagle has an instrument rating, it looks like it's violating the 'visual flight rules' cloud clearance requirements for class D/class E airspace! (Probably an optical illusion! Or it's in class G airspace, and below 1200 AGL.) <grin>

Nawww, FRNash, I'd say he's 'free as a bird'!;>

Hmmm, the eagle must be from Philadelphia and ignoring the flight plan. Or should I say, the game plan?
Great pictures of the storms coming in. You can be sitting outside in the sunshine then all of a sudden you get lake mist and stormy clouds move in. You might, or might not, get rain. Gitchee Gumee determines that, not the weather man.

Hey Hollidays-----I didn't appreciate your comments about the smoke from the west until I heard on the weather channel " MN fire smoke reaches Europe". Had to be some smoke.
