Eric Stewart and his wife were quite excited when this fellow swooped into their driveway and under their car. He said that they figured it was after the chipmunk that had been trying to steal his peanuts a day or two before. Eric grabbed his camera and started snapping pictures of the visitor and he said while he was busy with that, his wife, who was watching from the porch, spotted an eagle cruising the shoreline right behind him. Too bad you can't be in two places at once, Eric. :->
I don't have a clue as to the type of hawk, so feel free to chime in with an answer if you think you might know.

Well, my almost 3 year old granddaughter would say that it's a hawk bird!! Most birds are hawk birds to her, lol. Though, she knows what a crow and a blue "jake" sound like. Kids crack me up!!
Nice shots!

Really neat photos....I admire 'some' birds, not all. So....Eric is a Scot! Shoulda figured that with a name like Stewart. Maybe he'll chime in and let us know how far he can throw that stone?

Looks to me like Ms. Harrier was successful in obtaining lunch in the second photo.
It's not the rock throwing that's difficult, it's trying to get that caber to flip over that's the tricky part.....

That's an immature Cooper's Hawk, actually. In the second photo you can see the songbird it just grabbed for lunch in its left foot!

If I remember right the only way to scale the castle wall was to flip the caber and continue running up it on the branch stubs to the top. It had to flip! Now it is a game.

What a great surprise to capture, I'll go with Andrews guess of coopers hawk.

Pretty cool these close ups of this Hawk! I have no idea what this species is, but I know it's not an Iowa Hawkeye!

Thanks, Capt. and Richard for your input....I agree, flipping the caber has to be more difficult than tossing a stone. ;-)

It's true that the hammer, the stone and the weights were all just variations on throwing things. The caber was absolutely fascinating. It's interesting to learn that there once was a real purpose for doing that and it was not just a game invented in the throes of whiskey and boredom. In my gallery you'll see a series of three shots of a successful caber toss. My tam's off to them that can.

Is that the famous Henry Hawk? Or maybe Henrietta Hawk?
By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 - 02:09 pm:
That's interesting, Eric, because I was always of the belief that those were trials of strength/prowess...ie: "games"......whether 'imbibing' or not.:9 (ahem...this is a long way from discussing 'hawks', eh?)

My last 2 cents about the caber: I got to try it out in Durness, Scotland a few years ago when Nat and I happened to be in town for their Highland Games. The first time I tried caber tossing I almost cleared out an entire section of bleachers!!! After a wee bit of practice and a few more tosses I got one to flip and was promptly told "Aye, never knew a MacKay that couldn't toss a caber!!" (my family is Clan MacKay, btw). Granted, they gave me a beginners caber as the full sized ones are about 20 feet long and weigh a couple hundred pounds.
Now about the hawk; we have several around here that have a taste for doves and field mice. We also have a few falcons that fly through and some evenings, we hear a pair of owls hooting away. Sometimes we don't hear the owls but know they are around when the cats hide under the bed and won't come out....

now my last 2 cents....(honest, Mary)...Capt., LOL on the 'bleachers' incident and the scardy cats.:-)))
