Eric Stewart and company, recently took a hike on a wonderful new trail that the monks have constructed. Since I have no clue where it is, I'll let Eric take us along on their hike:

It starts on the Eagle Harbor cutoff road, about half way between the Copper Falls park and the Garden City road. The monks put an awful lot of work into this project. These photos show the stairs they constructed, several trails along the way and a couple of great spots for contemplation overlooking Jacob's Creek Gorge. An enterprising hiker can also access the trail by starting at Jacob's Creek Falls on M-26 and working up the gorge to the campsite. From there, the trail is an improved loop.

Looks like a beautiful trail and campsite. Thanks for sharing this "find" with us, Eric. I've added it to my "bucket list" of places I must see in the Keweenaw.

Very nice...thanks for the info and a big thanks to the monks.

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 08:22 am:

Nice photos! Speaking of the Monks, I'll have a poundcake creamcheese muffin to go please.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 08:51 am:

Uncle Chuck you should have been at Bear Belly last fall. I forgot a whole rum cake in the cupboard when I left !!!!!!!Remembered it near Marquette on way home. You betcha I was tempted to go back for it! (NOT)

I'm thinking the poor rock pile in the photo is the Arnold Mine which is located in that area. I have hiked in the area quite often, but never on a "path" through the woods; I always had to beat my own path. Hiking up from Jacob's Falls there is some incredible geology to be seen as it crosses several basalt flows and sandstone interlayers......

By Mark Groenink (Mark) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 08:56 am:

Looks like a great trail. I'll have put it on the list of things to see and do when we're up that way next spring.

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 09:03 am:

FABULOUS! The Monks have such a peaceful, serene area....any additions/improvements will be SO beneficial to everyone and everything! Gaia will love it for sure! Blessings!

By sometimesyooper (Nancyd) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 09:05 am:

And they make great brownies too. Not to mention the caramel/jalapeno candies!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 09:36 am:

'Poundcake creamcheese muffins'? Yum ;9 Peaceful, beautiful scenes this morning!

By MarilynnB (Marilynnb) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 09:44 am:

I'll take the molasses cookies! Perfect to munch while
hiking.

Don't forget the peanut butter and jelly brownies! The trail looks wonderful. Thank you to the Monks.

By sometimesyooper (Nancyd) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 10:02 am:

Well yes, Uncle Chuck. It's Holy food! Oh, and did I mention the ginger snaps and oatmeal/peanut butter/chocolate chip cookies?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 10:45 am:

Can't leave the Jampot without a peanut butter/thimbleberry brownie thing. Will definitely be making a stop there in October to stock up on jam.

And indeed it is Holy food....... as in "Holy cow this is good!!" J

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 12:34 pm:

Uncle Chuck, is that nose or your chin growin'?;)

By D. Clark (Dcclark) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 01:05 pm:

Yep, this is the monks -- if you follow the trail across the rock
pile (it's the Arnold #2's rockpile) and go left, you'll find an
amazingly well preserved set of ruins from the old mine. It's been
cleared out and cleaned up by the monks. Really amazing! Going
right, you end up at these scenes pictured here.

Wasn't it about 40 years ago that Jacob's Falls had the big washout across M-26, which wiped out a souvenir shop across the highway?

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 01:22 pm:

"Bench's overlooking Jacobs Creek Gorge"

Bench's? "Bench's" what? And who is "Bench"?

But possibly Jacob's Creek Gorge" — but only if it was owned by one fella named Jacob, or Jacobs' if it was owned by the Jacobs family (plural)! That really is is a possessive form! Of course "Jacobs Creek" would be correct if the creek merely passed by the Jacobs property, but wasn't owned by them.

Ouch, my head "hurt's."

All in fun, class! <weak grin>

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 02:49 pm:

Very nice photos. Scenic + rustic.

By sometimesyooper (Nancyd) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 04:02 pm:

I forgot to tell everyone about the pecan/chipolte brittle. Can't wait until we are up on Sept 27th!

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 04:37 pm:

SHIRLEY, Both dear! stomach too! lol

By Eric Stewart (Estew) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 06:57 pm:

The shot labeled as overlooking Jacobs Creek Gorge is, I believe, actually by Owl Creek. The other gorge overlook shot is by Jacobs Creek. I believe a stop at the Jam Pot is mandatory after completing the trail.

By James Alain (Charlevoix) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 07:53 pm:

Yes, years ago there was the big washout across from Jacobs Falls; there had been a small motel there. Allegedly a beaver dam way upstream gave way. There were various stories floating around as to how this came to be.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, September 9, 2011 - 08:32 pm:

Beavers are really getting a bad rap this week.

By J T (Jtinchicago) on Saturday, September 10, 2011 - 10:03 am:

To Peter, James and all:

Yes, in the Spring of 1971 a beaver dam gave way. That dam had been forgotten over the years and the amount of water the dam held back was sizable.

The water changed the falls area, moved & destroyed the motel - gift shop across from the falls and wiped out a good portion of M-26 beyond the motel.

By separate e-mail I have sent Charlie B&W photo taken from M-26 looking back at the motel - falls area. He might post the photo later.

Does anyone know how long this trail is?
