The first photo above has a lot in common with a modern day rock concert... a jostling crowd, a sea of noise, all eyes on the stars on the stage. But the man with the sledge hammer was a different kind of rock star, trying to smash through granite faster than the next guy. Today we revisit that granite, and a new incarnation of the historic stone coming into circulation.
A couple of years ago we had a Shoebox Memory about this competition and the granite they used. Also we have explored the old C&H publication "News and Views". The two topics have been brought together in a creative way by a local business, longtime Pasty Central sponsor Superior Woodworks, now also known as Rockwood Concepts<-- see a neat video with this link.
Toward the end of that 13 minute video you will see how a perceived "problem" was turned in to an opportunity, to celebrate the history of the Copper Country in a unique way. It has to do with the condition of the granite and the shape of the News & Views logo. Our thanks to Kraig Mahrley for sharing the story with us.
It's a beautiful calm day here in the Copper Country, but hurricane Irene is pounding the eastern U.S. this morning. Be careful out there.
Very ironic that you chose today to feature the granite story on Pasty.com, for the very shores of the Atlantic ocean which this granite was originally "harvested" are being hit by Hurricane Irene which you noted!
Just a brief background on the video... It was made for an Open House for the granite which was held at the De la Terre restaurant in Lake Linden, MI which features the granite as the original test installation.
THANKS again and I hope everyone enjoys the video!

Interesting! Now, while most of us are enjoying a beautiful day, lets offer up prayers for the unfortunate folks in the path of "Irene"!

Great little video; thanks Charlie and Kraig!! Be nice to have a small hand sample of that for comparison studies. Looks more like a granodiorite to me though but hey, the "black granite" at Home Depot isn't really granite either.... ;-)

Thanks for the video. Who knew??

My dad would say that both types of "rock concerts" sound the same to him!
I'm sure tomorrow will bring some more news but in my area (Eastern Connecticut) we seemed to get off without too much damage. Thanks for thinking of us.

In a 1945 copy of Calumet and Hecla News and Reviews, I found a picture of my dads' mom holding a basket of green beans from her victory garden. I would have to go back and find her birthdate to determine how old she was. It is sooooo interesting to come across things like that.
