Taana Kalliainen made a visit to the Canyon Falls, just outside of L'Anse and she was kind enough to take us along, beginning with the map showing the trail, to the boardwalk that takes you closer to the falls. Once you make the hike, you're rewarded with sights like the last three photos from Taana. From the silky waters flowing over, to the racing, bubbling, fury in the last two, you get the feel for the power of these falls. I bet if you lean in close and are real quiet, you could hear the water rushing by. :->

Greetings:
Baraga County has many scenic waterfall areas. I'm still undecided if Mother Nature is slowly taking them all back or if lack of funds is causing them to simply become overgrown.
For me, back in the vacuum tube era, there was an unusual rock formation East of Laurium, the Natural Wall. Has it been photographed recently or is the land now private - as in keep out?
I have photos but they are on 127 color film negatives back when the trees surronding the Natural Wall had less than 1 inch trunk diameters.
Beautiful pictures! A worthwhile walk to those beautiful falls. Mary, you & Shirley are so right, anyone would be able to hear them.

JT would like to hear more about that Natural Wall. And Capt. Paul you must have had some really interesting places to go to as part of your work!?

The land that the natural wall is on is privately owned.

Sad to say Tanya is correct; Natural Wall is on private property. However, if you’re willing to take a long hike, you can still access the Wall by walking up the stream that flows beside of it from Cemetery Road. The only problem is you would have to come back down the stream as well. I haven’t been back there in a number of years but the last time I was it was getting pretty well grown over and the elements are taking their toll as well. Somewhere in the past on here, yours truly posted an explanation of how the Natural Wall came to be; I just don’t know exactly where it’s located.
You’d be surprised at some of the wild and exotic places I have been to as a geologist, Kay. The Dr. and I visited some rather interesting places when we were in Michigan this summer as well. Hopefully I can find some time to post a few pics and share a few of those interesting locations.

At higher water, my husband Nate likes to kayak here and when I was in college, there was a great place to do a little cliff jumping there too. Haven't been there in a while!

I'm curious now. How far from Douglass Houghton Falls is the wall? I guess I had those confused, because those falls are on private property, too, so I've been told. (I know, one is a wall and one is waterfalls, but the natural wonder on private property confused me.)

Earthquakes in Washington (D.C.) and Virginia? Call the Department of Homeland Security, it must be a terrorist plot! (Knee-jerk, knee-jerk!) Or just the economy collapsing?
