Richard Barclay had a visitor recently, who decided to squat on his Keweenaw deck, in the sun all afternoon. He thought it might be a wood frog and I have no clue if it is, but I'm hoping that we might have a herpetologist (someone who studies reptiles and amphibians) in our viewing audience, who might help us identify this colorful critter. Maybe it's not even a frog, perhaps it's really a toad? Whatever he is, he's pretty exotic looking for a critter here UP North.

Wow, most unusual looking - almost exotic like a specie from the rain forests.

Absolutely adorable!! I love frogs!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, August 20, 2011 - 09:52 am:

Good grief, Janie!! There's nothing adorable about that creature, lol!! My first thought was a ceramic frog also. But my hubby says it's a tree frog. Some of them look like that. All the ones I see out here are a real pretty green. But he says they change colors. I do love frogs, though. As long as they're ceramic I will put them in my garden outside.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Saturday, August 20, 2011 - 09:58 am:

Deb, now how can you not love this humble little frog? :)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, August 20, 2011 - 10:02 am:

He kind of gives me the heebie jeebies, lol!! But I love my frogs that I have all around my yard, lol!!

I had one of those frogs hanging out on my bisrto set earlier this year. I thought it was kind of cute. Never saw a frog/toad that color. Someone told me it is a tree frog.

"CAN YOU NAME HIM ?"

Mary - He's gotta be KERMIT!

By Therese (Therese) on Saturday, August 20, 2011 - 06:36 pm:

I agree: a common grey tree frog named Kermit.

Happy Birthday Don Belanger Sr!!!

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Sunday, August 21, 2011 - 12:23 am:

Common /Grey Tree Frog. (Hyla Versicolor) Found statewide. They can change color from grey to green to brown depending on their environment.
If the photos would've shown its toes you would see they are sticky little suction cups! This enables them to be able to climb up most anything! We find them here often stuck to our window panes! Their call is the loud musical trill you sometimes hear day or night under your eaves, up on the roof etc. They get around!

By JAD, Orgnst (Jandalq) on Sunday, August 21, 2011 - 08:05 am:

If you Google it you find photos. There are also smaller red-eyed tree frogs. They have beautiful "songs," loud enough to keep you up at night.

Gray Tree Frog

DESCRIPTION: Tree frogs have large, sticky toe pads. Color can change gray, green, or brown, according to environment or activity. Underside of hind legs yellow. 1 1/2 to 2 inches long. (The two species, Eastern and Cope's, are very similar in appearance and habits).
