If you're interested in hydroplane power boat racing, then Sunday Lake, near Wakefield is where you should have been a few weekends back. Deb Simons was on hand and snapped some photos of the lake and the racing going on. After doing some research, I discovered this was actually the American Power Boat Association's Stock and Modified Nationals, which is touted as the largest boat racing event in North America. Pretty neat for a small town in the U.P. to be hosting a "Nationals Championship" like this, with folks coming from all over the country to compete. Sure looks like a fun and exciting event to attend as a spectator, too, watching those boats speeding by just skimming the water

Boy...haven't driven to the UP from that direction in a loooong time. I remember that lake from years ago. But nothing as active as these scenes. I miss traveling through Bessemer, Hurley, Iron Wood. Went that way to folks' when they lived in White Pine '79-'81. Always wanted to check out Black River Harbor ( is'nt that it?).

Our neighbor down in Tenn. was a hydroplane racer....be prepared, those of you who plan to attend, take some ear-protection 'cause a hydroplane sure can blast your eardrums with a heckava noise!
