Each day we feature a Day in History

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 - 08:06 am:

Morning Deb. Been trying to talk Precious into buying me a new faster computer. This one is almost as old as me. Bought it used from Fred Flintstone. The rocks in it are getting worn.

The Bunny Bread! Oh My Gosh, I Love It!! Your dreams come true here on Pasty Cam!! This made my day!

By Dale Beitz (Dbeitz) on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 - 08:22 am:

Mikie: It's not so much the rocks wearing out, as it is the salamanders that carry them around inside getting tired. Takes a lot of work to pick up the rock from the hard drive, carry it past the memory and the CPU, then carve the picture of what you asked to see on the inside of the LCD panel - and then do it all over again - and again. Most people think LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display, really it's Lots of Chisels Display. And those times when things seem really slow? That's either the salamanders having to sharpen the chisels, or taking a coffee break.

Any one remember the Star Bakery in Hancock? And Star Toast? Or how about Shei's bakery in L.L.? Not sure of the Spelling, Shie's, Shei's. Maybe Kenny will read this and correct me.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 - 09:06 am:

While staying with friends in Roscommon, we enjoyed some Spatz Bread from Saginaw yesterday morning before heading out to TC and the Leelanau Peninsula for some wine tasting and geology.

Checking the web this morning, our eyes are on the Gulf as it looks like something is a brewing and potentially heading for the Texas coast. Hopefully it isn't anything more that a tropical wave or tropical storm; anything stronger than that and we would likely have to end our vacation and head back down, not even reaching the Promise Land...... LLL

By Tom (Tom) on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 - 10:11 am:

Star Bakery --- across from Volwerth's. Sure do remember it and the 2 pound boxes of toast.
As a kid it was a treat to put peanut butter on the toast and dunk it in coffee.

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 - 01:22 pm:

Tom---These days it's Trenay Toast. Almost as good but best of all it's still being made!!

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 - 01:34 pm:

I promise I'll shut up right after this! The photo of Rock of Ages light house really rang my bell today. I am the happy owner of that lighthouse's clock taken off the wall in 1924 when the lighthouses became the responsibility of the Coast Guard. Prior to that they were taken care of by the US Lighthouse Establishment. Sadly I have to get rid of it as I am selling my house and going to live in my RV in Florida.

Good pics, even the loaf of bread.

Well, to be precise, it's (click → ) Trenary Toast.
See also (click → ) Trenary Home Bakery. (Their old web site!)

Star bakery's ad for their toast was often buttered never bettered.Well known at the time.

Ahh! Good ole korppu maitoa! (Spelling?)

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 - 04:07 pm:

Thanks for the explanation Dale.Am going to try to find some new salamanders.

Spelling: Perfect!
(Oh darn, now I gotta order some from Trenary!)

By AJ - WI (Ajinwi) on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 - 04:44 pm:

I've ordered korpuu's (FRNash: korpuus plural does not look right, so I used korpuu's. How would I write the plural for korpuu?) from Trenary and they were good. Not quite like Star toast, but quite good. Anybody know what the shelf life is for Trenary Toast? How long does it last in the cupboard?

"(FRNash: korpuus plural does not look right, so I used korpuu's. How would I write the plural for korpuu [sic]?)"

For most Finnish plurals, just add a 't', but sometimes a little additional modification is necessary, as in this case:

Korppu (singular)
Korput (plural)

"Anybody know what the shelf life is for Trenary Toast? How long does it last in the cupboard?"

Funny, they just seem to evaporate before ya know it! <grin>

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 - 05:58 pm:

I was traveling thru Marquette on my way home last fall. I had purposely bought Trenary Toast and a lucious rum cake (from the monks) as a treat for when I got home. Guess what I remembered that I had left behind in the cabin I had rented that week....yup my treats!!! Dum-dum! Guess I'll have to go up there again huh!
