Time sure seems to zip right on by us, so it's nice to pause at the end of each month and remember family and friends that have gone on before us. Today we hold the following people close to our hearts:

Beverly Cobb
Paul Hainault
Roger Martti
George Love
Carl Peterson
Donald Turner
Josh Wheeler
Irene Wills
Robert Voakes, Jr.
The servicemen and women who've given their all

A special note about a real American Hero, twenty-one year old Robert Lee Voakes, Jr. Spc Voakes died while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Robert graduated from Baraga High School in 2009 and was active in his community, where people knew him as a role model and an inspiration. Condolences to his family and friends, along with all others who have lost a loved one recently.

Please feel free to add the name of someone you wish to remember. Special thanks to Pete Sidwell for the beautiful sunset.

Beautiful sunset indeed!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 08:03 am:

Gorgeous!! Happily, I only recognize one of those names, and only because he's a friend's uncle.

Remembering Laurel Zechlinski who passed away 2 years ago this month on the 10th. We still think about her so often. She was a breath of fresh air, always with stories to tell that made us laugh. I'm sure she's up there making everybody crack up the way she did us.

It's like every single life is being played out inside its own tiny, little bubble. Floating effortlessly in the wind, alongside billions and billions of other bubbles.

Yet interestingly enough, while it's quite easy to peer inside other bubbles and notice what is or is not happening there, what they do and do not have, comparing to the point of envy or gloating, it's equally easy to notice, though so few do, that all of the bubbles are floating home, where everyone is equally worthy, important, and celebrated.

Celebrate your loved ones. You know the WELCOME HOME party on the other side sure is. Cry and grieve and miss our loved ones....but then, please smile and say Thank You, when you think of the wonderful stuff happening on the other side.

God's Blessings.

And this picture is fabulous!

By Stephen Pummill (Stevecpumm) on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 08:47 am:

Thank you, Walter, for reminding us each month of the continuing sacrifice of our service men & women. Arguments in Washington about the economy, debt ceilings, politics, etc. get all of the headlines.

Please take a moment to this Independence Day to thank our active and veteran military for their service to this country.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 09:19 am:

Awesome sunset indeed; what a way to close out the month!!

I hadn't realised that Roger Martti had passed away. He was one of my fishing pals from Hubbell that was always good for a few laughs when the fish weren't cooperating. I'm sure he will be missed....

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 09:27 am:

Remembering my friend Shane Reifert who died in Afghanistan. Spent many reenactments around the fire.

By MarilynnB (Marilynnb) on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 09:49 am:

What a beautiful sunset shot. We just got home from our
week long Keweenaw road trip--the first time taking our 8
month old sheepdog puppies on the road. Unfortunately,
we had 3 solid days of rain and didn't get a beautiful sunset
until our last evening, but it was worth the wait. The sun
rising or setting on the big lake makes my heart happy.
Luckily the puppies loved traveling and exploring the lake,
so we're already planning our next trip.

By Phil Kuusisto (Pkuusisto) on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 11:35 am:

Remembering our parents Norman and Helen Pooley, Ed and Sophie Kuusisto, Aunt Lyle Pooley, our sister in law and dear friend Phyllis Kuusisto, Karen Kuusisto, Janet Trasti, our good buddy Nitz Kumpula, our nephew "the Chief" Churchill, our niece Bailey Hartmann, our brother in law and friend Wayne Hartmann, our dear sweet baby girl Annie Kuusisto and our sister and best friend Flo Hartmann. You are always in our hearts and we love and miss you all so much.

By Sharon I. Smith (Sharons) on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 12:45 pm:

MarilynnB - did I run across you in the Gas Lite one day last week? I was sorry I didn't ask what kind of puppies. I thought about you for the rest of the week. I'm glad you got at least one good day out of it.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 12:50 pm:

By Kniton2 (Kniton2) on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 01:06 pm:

Please remember Kenneth L. Knighton, resident of Calumet who passed away on June 24. He loved many people of the Keweenaw and enjoyed the wildlife here.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 05:06 pm:

On Sunday June 29, 1975 my heart was ripped open when our 16 year old son ended his lift. Never take for granted your loved ones especially your kids! Not looking for sympathy ... just reminding us to love the best you can each day. You never know. Peace to those who have had a recent loss. Whether a family member or friend or neighbor. One gets a little taste of heaven each sunrise or sunset we see on Pasty. Thank you every one.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 05:08 pm:

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 06:43 pm:

Today I mourn for a grandchild, my first, that I never had the joy to know. My daughter and son in law were 3 weeks into pregnancy only to have their baby leave to be with our Lord.

By Therese (Therese) on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 07:20 pm:

I remember my Aunt Eleanor Kehoe who
died June 1979, far too young and leaving
behind two kids and her husband Matt. I
always remember her fondly.

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 07:59 pm:

Remembering Rick's Uncle Bob LeVeque 81, from Ontonagaon who passed away earlier than we thought he would. He had just had a stroke a couple of months agowhich left him unable to speak. Then he had a cancerous tumor removed from his brain. The Lord called him home last week when he had a sudden heart attack. We feel blessed that he didn't have to suffer any longer & is resting in peace now. He was such a kind, gentle man who had many friends wo loved him.

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, July 1, 2011 - 06:57 am:

Kay and Janie....God's Blessings...may he wrap you in his huge loving healing embrace.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, July 1, 2011 - 09:09 am:

Janie T., that is so hard to accept, the same thing happened to my husband and me way back in 1957. (maybe 'they' are playing together in heaven now) I'm also remembering my dear, wonderful husband, Frank, who went to be with the Lord on May 7th, 2011. Our home is so empty without him? God bless all of you who are in grief.

By Lisa Walters (Ypsilisa) on Friday, July 1, 2011 - 10:50 am:

I see from the obit in the Daily Mining Gazette that Paul Hainault had a son named Anthony. If he happens to read here, I hope he will email me, on the off-chance that he is the Tony Hainault I met in 1971. :)

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 - 04:38 am:

In memory of my Aunt, Mary Way, whose birthday is today.
