This is such a wonderful time of year, with all the new beginnings of everything from plants, to animals, there are so many things to marvel at, like these ducks, captured by Dennis Kemper. The iridescent color on the male mallard's head, adds a splash of color here UP North, where there previously wasn't any, due to the leafless trees. That all changes with the arrival of spring, since everything either comes back to life or like these feathered friends, they make there way back, from down south. The migration through or back, is a sure sign that we're done with winter, so a sight like this, is welcome indeed.

Well, aren't those some lucky duckies....

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 - 07:31 am:

I thought I would duck-in here at work. Good thing, because I don't like quackers in bed.

Great pictures!! I love ducks!!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 - 07:42 am:

Ok, bad joke of the day. You know what happens to a duck when it flies upside-down?? it quacks up!! I can hear the groans now......

Although that does beg the question; if a duck can quack up, can it also quack down?? Ahhhh, it must be humpday across the land.

By Mike Diljak (Mikebass) on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 - 08:27 am:

All right Paul - That will be enough wise quacking out of you! (I
wonder how long we can keep this pun going?)

By Dale Beitz (Dbeitz) on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 - 08:34 am:

One can only assume that ducks, then, were not fans of the 80's Barbara Mandrell country song, "You can eat quackers in my bed anytime".

I suppose until Mary or Charlie has enough of our 'pun'ishment for the day... J

Say Charlie...this would be a good day to advertise Aflac earth-quack insurance.
By the way, is that male duck blind in one eye?

By JoAnne Stefanac (Davejostef) on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 - 10:21 am:

When we first moved into our house, we had a pair of mallards coming to our yard. I would feed them bread crumbs but then they started to get a little pushy about it. They would come up on our deck and used their beaks to tap, tap, tap on our glass sliding door...as if to say, "FEED US!". Needless to say, the free lunches stopped!

By Les Henriksen (Lesh) on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 - 10:42 am:

Uh---Capt. Paul, your query poses an interesting paradux!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 - 10:49 am:

I had a pair of mallards that litteraly hung out on our patio. I would give them bread, for the first time, and I thought they would leave. They took a nap then got up and tapped on the glass patio door as if to say it was time for lunch. Just like JoAnne, I had to stop feeding them.

That is why I had to take down the bird feeder I had up. I had one pesky squirrel that would not stay away. It got smart and climbed up the screen, to the patio door, to get to the feerder. Well, I finally took the feeder down. The squirrel climbed up to the top of the screen and I guess it saw the feeder was gone and from the top of the screen it did something that streaked all the way down the glass and took off. Never did see a squirrel come back after that. LOL. I saw the squirrel do that too. I could not help but laugh at that. I guess that squirrel got me LOL

Hi
We have had so much rain downstate recently that I have seen mallards in the small ponds of water beside the road, literally puddle ducks.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 - 02:04 pm:

Alex, it's cauliflower eye on Mr. Mallard.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 - 02:45 pm:
