In case you're new to the Pasty Cam, at the end of each month, we set aside the day to feature a sunrise or sunset photo in memory of those that have passed on before us. It's a nice way to stop and remember our friends and loved ones that are no longer with us. This month we recall:

Steve Bashaw
Joseph "Ben" Drake
Bea Gekas
Gloria Jackson
Father Wayne Marcotte
Eve Nelson
Cornelius Sochay
Marian Strand
Berniece Therrian
The servicemen and women who have given their all

Please feel free to add the name of someone you hold dear, that has left this world too soon. Special thanks to Shawn Malone for the beautiful sunrise photo to reflect on and remember.

One of those we honor with May's remembrance is Gloria Jackson of Eagle Harbor. Gloria will be greatly missed, as she was a part of many U.P. institutions - like Northern Michigan University, Finlandia, Keweenaw Historical Society and others.

I had the privilege of being in Bill and Gloria Jackson's Eagle Harbor home recently, talking shop with Bill about Cable America and Pasty.NET. One of the earliest webcams on the Internet originates from Bill and Gloria's deck, and is displayed on the Cable America website. It's a view that Gloria must have greatly enjoyed each day, surpassed only by that heavenly view which surely now is hers.

Gloria Jackson's funeral will be this morning at 11am (5/31) at Erickson-Crowley in Calumet. Our condolences to Bill and the family.

A very beautiful picture as well.

Thoughts and prayers to Laurie.

Remembering with honor and love Uncle Ed Waikel, Fireman, US Navy, WWII. You were fun and generous and a great father, husband, and uncle. We miss you so ~ especially Aunt Helen. We're taking good care of her.

Also, in regards to the question about The Wall. Heard last night that 5 names were added to the Viet Nam Wall this year as a result of death from injuries/illnesses from the war. Great to know that those troops are properly honored.

Forgot to comment on the spectacular picture! Thanks Shawn!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 - 07:20 am:

Gorgeous picture!!

Thanks for checking into that about the wall jbuck!

Remembering our good friend, Steve Bashaw, who passed away far too early from cancerous tumors caused by Agent Orange. Our hearts go out to his family, and we will miss him here, too. Also remembering my paternal grandmother, Eva Durocher, who passed away in May of 1972. I still miss her. She was a wonderful grandmother! Also remembering my Aunt Dorothy, who passed away in May, though I can't remember the year. My mom really misses her only sister so much.

Also remembering my dad, who would have been 84 yesterday, and my father-in-law who would have been 82 yesterday. They are so missed!

If that picture doesn't bring to mind Heaven, it certainly brings to
mind Heaven on Earth. Wow, Shawn!

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 - 08:48 am:

This was appropriate for yesterday as well:

I thank Thee, Lord, for blessings, big and small;
For spring's warm glow and songbird's welcome call;
For autumn's hue and winter's white snow shawl.

I thank Thee for the harvest rich with grain;
For tall trees and the quiet shadowed lane;
For rushing stream, for birds that love to fly;
My country's land, the mountains and the plain.

I thank Thee for each sunset in the sky,
For sleepy nights, the bed in which I lie;
A life of truth and peace; a woman's hand,
Her hand in mine unit the day I die.

I thank Thee, Lord, for all these things above;
But most of all I thank Thee for Thy love.

~ Ralph Gaither
(written while a POW in North Vietnam)

Jbuck...WOW....I cannot imagine the horrors of being a Prisoner Of War, much less writing something SO profound. God Bless Ralph Gaither.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 - 11:13 am:

My young reenacting friend Shane Reifert gave his life to protect us in Afghanistan. Thanks Shane for your ultimate sacrifice. This last weekends reenactment and mass were dedicated to you.

By Mel, MN (Mehollop) on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 - 11:16 am:

In memory of my 'pseudo' mom, Jane Focht, who passed on May 4.

In memory of my grandmother, Nedra McEowen, who would have been 93 today.

And in memory of my grandfather, Maurice Hollopeter, who passed away on May 4, 2000.

Miss you all very much.

By Marylyn Hoffman (Marylyn) on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 - 11:44 am:

Remembering my father, Bill De Martin, who passed on May 27, 2002. It seems like only yesterday to me.

By Cindy, New Baltimore, MI (Cindy) on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 - 11:52 am:

What an absolutely gorgeous picture! Today would have been my parents 64th anniversary. I hope they are having a wonderful celebration in Heaven right now. I miss you Mom and Dad!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 - 12:03 pm:

Mikie--So sorry to hear about your young re-enactor friend. You
must have been thinking of him on Memorial Day. How wonderful
that your last re-enactment was dedicated to him. I'm sure his
family appreciated it.

Can anyone tell me if Lake's Dairyland is open?
Thanks

By Nick Karjala (Nmkarjala) on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 - 04:41 pm:

Remembering John and Marian Strand and their daughter Jackie. Jackie was a sweet, lovely young woman whom I dated in the early 1950's.

Also remembering Ken and Eve Nelson. I knew Ken when he had a used car sales business in the Copper Country many years ago. I met Eve in the early 1970's at the Summer Place when I entertained the evening dinner patrons with the organ one summer weekend when the scheduled entertainment canceled due to illness.

Was very saddened by the recent passing of Fr. Wayne Marcotte. He will be missed by many people. I had the privilege of working with Fr. Marcotte in the rehabilitation field and was always inspired by his gentleness, kindness and his guidance. He helped me immensely in my recovery and to this day and each day forward I will forever be grateful for his help and guidance. We shall meet again.

TO JIMH; There is a sign saying dairyland will be opening soon. From my understanding it was sold and, of course, new owners.

Remembering my mom, Betty Ravasz, who would have turned 88 today (May 31)

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 - 11:19 pm:

I remember Wayne Marcotte from when I used to go to the LLHS. He was just a nice guy even then. I went to LLHS from 6th grade to 9th. Even way back then he wanted to become a priest. We were in the same grade, 9th grade was in '54. Then we moved to Tamarack Mills so I had to go to $ Bay HS.
