Memorial Day is the day set aside to honor the men and women who have died while serving our country. The cemetery pictured here, with the cute young lady amongst all the flags honoring the veterans buried there, is the Lakeview Cemetery in Calumet, snapped by the Filipowicz Family. Here in Lake Linden our local American Legion Post 90, place flags on each veterans grave and the Auxiliary ladies come along afterwards and tie a poppy to each flag. What a great way to honor our veterans, who've given their all for our freedoms. A big thank you to them and to the local vets clubs and auxiliaries for honoring them this way.

The second photo, sent in by Donna MacIntosh is a tribute to our veterans, she spotted on a home in L'Anse. That's another great way to honor our vets here UP North, both the person displaying it and Donna for passing it on to us as a reminder of what the day is about.

The last photo comes from Larry Chabot (author of The U.P. Goes to War), who said that his son-in-law, George Paoli, took this photo on a recent visit to the Statue of Liberty. George's Dad is a Yooper, still living in South Range, so we thought the Pasty Cam viewers might enjoy this unique shot from a former Yooper, visiting New York and its landmarks.

Wishing everyone a Happy Memorial Day. Take time to remember our veterans this day.

“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.”
~Joseph Campbell

Today's Affirmation

I humbly remember the price that has been paid for freedom.
Today's Meditation

Dear God,

Today, as I reflect on the many wars that have been fought for freedom,
I am both humbled and somber.
I am grateful for the sacrifices made by so many people that I might be free,
soldiers and civilians who have paid the ultimate price for liberty.
I am also saddened to think that we humans still have not decided to eliminate war as a means to resolving our differences.
I pray that we are able to enter into a new and sustained era of peace.
I pray that we open our hearts to one another.
I see a world where everyone is free to be who You created them to be,
a world where peace and joy are enjoyed and shared by all.
I see a world, where relationships between nations and between persons are based on love.
Bless those who have died for freedom and those who live for peace.
Write Your truth upon our hearts.
Thank You.

Amen

By Laurie B. (Ratherberiding) on Monday, May 30, 2011 - 09:08 am:

On this Memorial Day, we will celebrate the life of my brave husband, Steve Bashaw. He served as a Marine in Vietnam and as a Seabee in the Naval Reserve. He did not die in combat (so to speak) but did die from a cancer that he got serving his country in Vietnam. He is a true war hero!

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Monday, May 30, 2011 - 09:23 am:

Laurie know that many of us will be with you this afternoon during the services, in heart and mind. Steve was a good guy and a true American citizen. God bless all.

Thanks to all those that have served and those presently serving. Peace to all their families as well.

Will there ever come a time when we will no longer have to mourn the fallen & the wounded?

I cannot imagine it in my lifetime.

Confusion will be my epitaph.
As I crawl a cracked and broken path.
If we make it, we can all sit back and laugh.
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying,
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying.
(King Crimson)

God bless and protect them.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, May 30, 2011 - 10:32 am:

Laurie, as I did not know Steve personally, I regard him as my friend as he proudly fought for my freedom and love for our Great country, America. May you find peace in your heart that Steve is with you in heart and spirit. God Bless You!

Laurie--Your Pasty Cam friends are with you in spirit. Steve fought
a long battle. He was brave and so are you.

By Julie from Novi (Geeper) on Monday, May 30, 2011 - 10:47 am:

That cute young lady is Natalie and she is now 14! This Memorial Day we are remembering our dad Jack Gazvoda who died this past January. He was a veteran of WWII.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, May 30, 2011 - 10:48 am:

Laurie, I just came over to pasty to put that same thing on here. I've been holding off because I wanted to give you time, but I'm glad you were able to do it. He was a brave man, for sure, and we thank him for his (and your) service to our country. I'm sorry you lost him due to that service:( Wish I were going to be there with you today to give him his sendoff.

Thinking of my dad also, whose birthday it would have been today. He'd be 84. He was in the Navy during WWII and was one of the first people to go to Japan after the war was ended. He was always proud of his service. Happy Birthday, dad! You'd be happy that Memorial Day is on your birthday this year. You were always mad that they changed it from the 30th to the last Monday of the month, lol.

God Bless the USA!!

By Cindy, New Baltimore, MI (Cindy) on Monday, May 30, 2011 - 11:53 am:

Deb, I also cannot help but think of my dad today. It's not his birthday, but we lost him last October at the age of 85. In his final days, he spoke so often of WWII, sometimes as if he was still there. It was so apparent that there are things that our soldiers of any war experience that only they can really fully understand. The memories, I think, are deep inside them forever. God bless all of our veterans.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, May 30, 2011 - 12:54 pm:

Laurie, have been thinking and praying for Steve all week. Was my pleasure to have met him a while ago. Our sincere condolences.

By Paul H. Meier (Paul) on Monday, May 30, 2011 - 01:09 pm:

One Copper Country Vet, whose history is almost lost, is Antoine (Anton) Gipp. He is the progenitor of the Gipp family. Anton served with the 27th Michigan Infantry from 10 October 1862 until 21 July 1865 when he mustered out as a Sergeant. The 27th Michigan was unique in that it served both in the Western and Eastern theaters. Gipp was along for the whole war and was wounded at the Angle at Spottsylvania, VA. What makes this more remarkable is he apparently hedged on his age when he enlisted. Military records show him at age 42 when he enlisted, all other records indicate he was actually 52! This was one tough dude.
Our thoughts should be with all who fought and died for this country as well as with all the veterans who have passed away. Those of us who served and were fortunate enough not to see combat can only imagine their sacrifice.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Monday, May 30, 2011 - 01:18 pm:

Laurie, I am thinking of you today.Even tho I never met Steve I know he was an honorable man who loved his family and the country he fought for. May he rest in peace. My thoughts will be with you thru during the service. It was 6 yrs and 31 days since I was in your situation. Love you,Fran

Todoay I raised my flag with two hands. On one hand, I raised my flag in somber gratitude for our fallen, who gave the ultimate sacrifice fighting for peace, and for the freedoms we all enjoy today. To them and their families, I say THANK YOU.
On the other hand, I raised my flag in great pride and joy, living in the greatest country on earth, thanks to our brave, courageous men and women in uniform, who still are fighting for peace and freedom. For you and your families, I have the greastest appreciation, and the utmost respect, and I say THANK YOU.
GOD BLESS AMERICA...THE LAND OF THE FREE AND HOME OF THE BRAVE!!!
Enjoy this Memorial Day everyone. Don't eat too many hot dogs or drink too much beer. :>)

On the other hand, eat and drink all you want...it's a free country!

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Monday, May 30, 2011 - 02:33 pm:

On Memorial Day I want to thank all who have served and are now serving and those who have died for our country. My cousin David Cavis lost his life in Viet Nam in February 1968. My friend Steve Bashaw lost his life the other day because of the effects of Agent Orange which was used in the Viet Nam war. Both are American Heroes. One lost his life quickly from a bullet & the other other died slowly throughout the years since the war because of a chemical used. I want to thank both of you for what you did & gave for our country. Rest in peace.

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Monday, May 30, 2011 - 02:40 pm:

I also want to thank my Dad, Ransom Cundy who bravely fought & survived one of the worst battles of World War II, the Battle of Iwa Jima. I never knew of his service to his country until after his death. Many who have seen the worst are ones who do not talk about what they endured. He's a hero in my eyes. And I want to thank all others who have served in our wars & are presently doing the same. You're a great breed of special people who have chosen to protect our freedoms.

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Monday, May 30, 2011 - 02:42 pm:

Also honoring and remembering the vets that have been wounded, and/or are ill as a result of their service.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Monday, May 30, 2011 - 03:43 pm:

Laurie...Steve is a TRUE war hero, for sure. He didn't die in Vietnam, but his service over there is what took his life in the end. Same for my cousin's husband, Bernie Schmitt, Jr...his cancer was due to Agent Orange, used in Vietnam at that time. Yes indeed, they are heroes in our eyes, too, Laurie. God Bless you and your family during this difficult time. HUGS...

By Sldmi (Sldmi) on Monday, May 30, 2011 - 04:29 pm:

My condolences to all who have lost family members in service to our country. I learned today, at our local Memorial Day ceremony, that the effects of Agent Orange can last up to seven generations. Our local American Legion official shared that information. He thought it was important that everyone know how devastating Agent Orange is. My uncle fought in Viet Nam and died from cancer several years ago, possibly from Agent Orange. I'm praying for all fallen heroes and their families today.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, May 30, 2011 - 04:51 pm:

Laurie: I just read about your husband's death in the paper and also read it here. I did not even realize he was sick. My condolences to you and your family. I worked at UPPCO with your sister, Mickey. In fact, you trained me in my job in Customer Service, was it? It's been so long, I can't even remember what department it was. Debi (Schaaf) Steinle
