Today's photos come from E. Neil Harri, who is always willing to share his pictures with us. While we appreciate that, it looks like he's NOT going to share where he took today's shots, as no true morel hunter will give away where to find a crop like he's discovered. In all my morel hunting years, I've never come across a patch as dense growing in the wild. Neil said they had a good day picking and were going to enjoy the "fruits of their labors" by cooking up some morels and onions to garnish their venison burgers for dinner. Then breaded morels will be on the menu the following night. It doesn’t get much better than that in morel season here in the Keweenaw!

Beautiful shots, Neil. Morels--what I didn't have for Sunday dinner
because I WASN'T in the UP.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 - 07:19 am:

now, all we need is some T-bones!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 - 07:21 am:

Exactly, Janie!! But I prefer ribeyes, lol!! And since my hubby does NOT like mushrooms, I'd have them all to myself!

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 - 07:38 am:

We ended up having them with venison backstraps. A true Keweenaw meal.
We went out for morels again yesterday. We found over 100 in a couple of hours.
I have heard from other hunters who have done as well. Conditions seem perfect for a banner year. Get out there and start searching if you like mushrooms.

OMG....way to make my mouth water...morels and vennie? OMG......Thanks Neil!!!

And you got that Mary...don't tell where your patches of anything are...cause they'll be way gone.....I did that ONE time...took a friend to my secret blueberry patch, and I never picked another one there. Karma got involved tho. There's a house built right on that patch now. :D

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 - 08:29 am:

Donna--You're right. Blueberry patches, trout fishing streams and
morel locations are practically sacred. Or at least that's what my
father taught me.

By Jim (Keweenawpress) on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 - 08:53 am:

Add good copper/mineral finding locations to that list.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 - 09:35 am:

Exactly how high were you (altitude-wise) when you took those photos, Neil)? You must have one super-zoom on your camera :-)

(Vaguely singsong, dreamy narrator):

Neil, you are watching a pocket watch swinging back and forth...You are getting sleepy...you trust me completely...you are getting sleepier...you feel good about everything...you are now emailing me the GPS coordinates for your high-density morel patch.

@Dunerat. . .

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Huh?!? What just happened?

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 - 01:37 pm:

The ones I would pick, would make me want to take a dip in the Gitch, moral of the story, I'll stick with the super market thank you!

By Brenda Leigh (Brownmoose) on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 - 01:45 pm:

Makes me want to head north to pick morels. Last year I picked here in Menominee County and only found six of them. I did enjoy those six. YES, VENISON AND MUSHROOMS...YUMMY.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 - 02:59 pm:

As Rachael Ray would say, "Yummo."

By Brenda Leigh (Brownmoose) on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 - 04:57 pm:

Neil thank you very much for the heads up on the getting out there. I went to where I picked six mushrooms last year and FOUND forty of them. WOW what a surprise. They are right on our acreage so I don't have to worry about anyone picking my patch clean. So tomorrow I too will be eating venison, morels and a rhubarb dessert. Nothing like a good Yooper meal.

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 - 05:09 pm:

I almost forgot about the rhubarb. We have some growing here too.
My cousin said he hopes to catch some brookies to go with morels, to pay me back for feeding him venison.
I think there are a few partridge breasts in freezer yet too.
Get out there. Check areas where you can see without too much ground cover. Aspen regeneration in a clearcut is where I found my biggest patch.Old forest fire areas are hot too.

This is a great site with morel info.

I do not like mushrooms but, I can tolerate mushroom soup, that is minus big chunks of mushrooms in it.LOL

By Donna (Donna) on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 - 07:19 am:

Cool site Neil...and Brenda, you found FORTY morels in your spot??? OMG...JACKPOT!!

I'm hearing big numbers from the shroomers I know...lots of morels out there.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 - 06:26 pm:

why would anyone want to eat those?

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 - 10:45 pm:

Let me count the ways we had this delicate fungi this week. I had fried morels in butter which is the classic method. I had great stuffed morels, scalloped potatos with cheese and morels. I also had deep fried morels in oil.
I had a morel soup that was the best mushroom soup I ever tasted in my life, bar none.
I had morels with shrimp and veggies in the wok We froze a bunch too. We picked five gallons so far so we are doing a lot of test cooking.
