What a treat we get today.... courtesy of E.Neil Harri and his flying machine. Actually, his camera was a part of it too and thank goodness when he goes out on adventures, he remembers to take it along and share some of the beauty he sees from up so high.

Neil snapped the first photo of the Presque Isle Falls, while flying over the Porcupine Mountain area. Neil said there is a trailer camping area nearby and that this is a popular steelhead fishing spot, at the mouth of the river. Sure looks to be raging at full force when this picture was snapped... one can only imagine the roar you'd hear if you were right down there on observation deck the area provides for safe viewing.

The second shot of the Black River Falls, was taken while Neil was flying over Gogebic County. This falls and river are part of the Federal Recreation area there. An observation deck is on hand there, too, so you can get close to the rushing water without having to worry about getting washed away, over the edge.

We can always count on a good view, with Neil behind the wheel... thanks for the tour today!

Fantastic! Thanks Neil.

WOW!! Great shots!!!

There are several falls along this lower streatch of the Black River in Gogebic county. Protected, somewhat! Diminished, wilderness becomes a special unit of property treated like a historic relic or ruin--a valuable remnant. It becomes a place of vacations ( a word related to "vacant, empty")

I have been to the Presque Isle Falls many times, and I am never disappointed in the beauty. The trails vary from handicap accessible to steep steps. The swinging bridge crossing the river to the island is the ultimate destination.

You can always tell it's spring in the UP by the roaring rootbeer coloured waterfalls this time of year....

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, April 29, 2011 - 08:52 am:

Wonderful aerial waterfall photos, Neil. Thank you.

We drove up Lakeshore Drive yesterday and were treated to spectacular views of the Eagle River Falls and Jacobs Falls. Eagle River falls were so full and gorgeous, and they were roaring. The falls were so loud that my husband couldn't even hear the roar of Lake Superior when we were near the falls, but I did. It was a windy day that changed from snow to breaks in the clouds to the sun out, for the first time in several days. The only thing missing was my camera, which unfortunately was left back home.

Beautiful pics.

By Liz Timmer (Lizziet) on Friday, April 29, 2011 - 12:33 pm:

On Monday, I had to let my Scottie, Cai, a companion of 14 years who left his pawprints all over the UP and near many of its waterfalls, go. Many things started to decline and he finally gave me that look that every pet owner dreads. I know that the end of the month memorials are only for humans, so I submit this today. Let the bagpipes wail...

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, April 29, 2011 - 01:10 pm:

Liz...my condolences. It sounds like you did the right thing.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, April 29, 2011 - 01:30 pm:

Liz, having Scottish Terriers in our family for over 20 years we too have said our goodbys as well. As hard as it is, it's best to let a Scottie go with dignity. I'm not one to push meds to watch a Scottie live a non quality life to ease my heart. Grieve for Cai and someday enrich your life once again with another Scottie son or daughter....just a thought, 2 Scotties are quite fun!:)

Liz, you made me cry. I know the pain you're going through right now. My beloved Golden of 13 years had that look before he left me. Hang in there. My heartfelt condolences.

BTW, great pics. Sure would be fun to fly with Neil!

Beautiful waterfalls!

By Paul Roberts (Grizzlyadams) on Friday, April 29, 2011 - 04:03 pm:

So is there anyone that has gotten a picture of the Eagle River falls recently? It'd be nice to see them at more then just a trickle!

By Doug Smith (Smitty) on Friday, April 29, 2011 - 04:23 pm:

Looks like some die-off in the trees around Black River. Nice shots today.

By Doug Smith (Smitty) on Friday, April 29, 2011 - 04:25 pm:

oops.... Maybe that's not all Pine Trees I'm looking at ;o(

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, April 29, 2011 - 06:35 pm:

Ahh...Liz...deepest condolences...we all know that heartbreak far too well.

By Jack K (Jackinct) on Friday, April 29, 2011 - 09:10 pm:

I always love E. Neil Harri's shots. Waterfall ones are especially beautiful.

Liz and all who've loved and lost pets -- I must share this conversation I had with my almost-4-year-old granddaughter, Ella, this week. Early in the week, we had been looking at pictures and had seen some of my cats, Milo and Maddie. Maddie I still have but Milo died when Ella was only a few months old. So yesterday she said, "Why you don't have Milo anymore?" I said, "Well, he died." She said, "He died? I didn't know cats died." So I had to explain that sadly cats (and dogs) don't live as long as people. So sweet to live in a world where you don't know that your pets die......

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Friday, April 29, 2011 - 09:27 pm:

The Presque Isle falls are in the Porkies state park but in the small portion of the park that is in Gogebic county.
Most of the connifers in both pictures are mature hemlock. That species has been mostly cut down in commercial areas of the UP because it has a lower value.
It is good for deer so that area of the Porkies along the lake turns into a big deeryard in late winter. Hemlock makes for good thermal cover.

It is never easy to lose a loved one, pet and/or human.
