Yes, you're seeing correctly, these folks are surfing on Lake Superior in the midst of the snowstorm a few days ago. Thanks to Shawn Malone braving the elements, along with the wet suited surfers, we get a front row seat to the sporting event, minus the chilling winds and pelting snowflakes of that day. It takes a hearty soul to surf the chilly waters of Superior in the summer months, but doing it when it's cold and snowy, well let's just say these folks have some real SISU! I'm shivering just looking at the pictures. :->

Holy Wha Man. Those suits can't be "heated", or can they? Or are the surfers numb? Wow. That's a hardcore! LOL....I bet every surfer in Hawaii to Australia...can't put this on their resume! :D

Great pics! They may be numb from the cold, but they don't have to worry about being eaten by sharks.

Like duuude, those waves look so, like gnarly, duuude.....

Now that is dedication. It reminded of a Harley rider that I have seen all winter long, riding his motorcycle, so long as the roads were dry. Even when it was below freezing, he was out there. I figured that either his car broke down or he was trying save on gas.

For some reason that second pic looks more like a cardboard silhouette of a surfer than it does a real surfer. Had to look three or four times to convince myself that it was real.

You actually stay pretty warm in a full wetsuit, especially if you're doing something energetic like surfing, windsurfing, or scuba diving. In fact, the bigger problem can be getting physically tired from working against that stretchy neoprene.

On the other hand, check out the surfer's right thigh and back in the second photo. Looks like ice buildup, just like on a lake freighter.

They should have a fire going on the beach to warm up when they get out of the water. Then again they probably want to get out of those wet-suits as soon as they can.

My guess is that the second photo is a cropped copy of the first one

Isn't it entertaining to see surfing in the midwest! North of Duluth they were surfing at Stony point about 12 miles north of Duluth on the scenic highway 61.

Nate's going to be so excited when he sees Pasty cam today! Nate used to kayak in Lake Superior, in the same conditions when we were in college. He often wants to take a day off work just to head up to the Lake when he sees the wave forcast like that! We just recently watched a film called Unsalted. It's a documentary of the great surfing conditions on the great lakes! It was a neat film!
