Most people looking at these photos from Brenda Leigh will think that they can't be current. But they are! Brenda and her hubby, Jim went on what she called an Antarctic Expedition just this past Thursday, along the Lake Michigan shoreline between Menominee and Escanaba. They found varying ice conditions from what you see in the top photo, to the mountains of ice you see in the rest of the shots. Isn't that ice piled up like that amazing? Brenda calls this "ice shoves" or "ice jams" and said there was about a half mile of ice and pile after pile like those in the photos. No matter what you call them it seems unreal with the warmer temps last week, that there can be that amount of ice piled high along the shores like this.

Brenda's last photo is a fun one... see if you can spot the bear amongst the ice chunks? It's just his head, with an eye indentation and his dark snout. I bet he's "beary cold" out there, too. ;->

If you'd like to go along with Brenda on the complete expedition, just click on this link for a slideshow of the entire album of photos: Brenda and Jim's Lake Michigan Antarctic Expedition.

As tired as we are of winter right now, these pictures are still
beautiful. Just can't wait to get back to the Keweenaw.
Hopefully in June.

I recall those ice shoves in Menominee. During the 1930's my dad drove us out to Henes Park to see where the ice had almost covered the street light poles at the swimming beach. I wonder if anyone from that area has photos of that?

WOW!!! What a fabulous slide show....I can "feel the cold" radiating from all those ice mountains. GREAT pics Brenda! And yes MarilynnB, we want Spring, but there certainly is still, GREAT BEAUTY surrounding us in this season.

Still lots of ice, not much bear ground. :D

Didn't have a chance to post yesterday (had to drive my husband back and forth for dialysis treatment) but I wanted to comment about Lake Michigan's ice...when we lived there in 1979/80, someone told us that the Lake would freeze over, which we couldn't imagine, but sure enough it did!! Hard to believe large bodies of water like the Great Lakes could ice up. Beautiful to behold!
