At first glance, you might think these photos are just of the snow, looking dirty as the melting continues here in the Keweenaw, but upon closer inspection, you'll see someone peeking out at you. By the looks of these photos, Michele Mukavetz had some fun with the chipmunk in her yard recently. She said that they were watching this guy as he kept popping up on the other side of their driveway, so grabbing the camera they quickly captured a couple shots of his funny little antics. Smile making pictures for sure!

Looks like there's still more snow in the U.P. than the L.P.

By Pam & Jim - Calumet (Pjgrill) on Saturday, April 2, 2011 - 07:50 am:

Our boy Willie appeared day before yesterday, and was running around under the feeders gathering up the sunflower seeds dropped by the birds, yesterday I put piles of seed in different places, and he spent the day, and early evening gathering. Sure was happy to see the little fella. Have a great weekend.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Saturday, April 2, 2011 - 07:58 am:

That looks like a big chipmunk, almost like one of those new catmunks.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, April 2, 2011 - 09:52 am:

I don't know about "catmunks", Alex, but I have to agree that the last photo does look like a cat....a big, fat one! :>

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, April 2, 2011 - 10:20 am:

Speaking of cats; A very sad morning in this house as Dr. Nat's big snuggly cat died suddenly at 3:20 am. We're going to have him cremated so he will always be with us. He was a Norwegian forest cat and deserves a proper Viking end....

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Saturday, April 2, 2011 - 10:45 am:

Capt Paul & Dr. Nat..very sorry to hear of your family loss. It's never easy!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Saturday, April 2, 2011 - 11:54 am:

My condolences Capt and Dr. Nat. I have always admired the Norwegian as being a very rugged and handsome looking breed with a classic cat face.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, April 2, 2011 - 12:45 pm:

Capt. Paul, I just looked up the Norwegian Forest Cat......that's one big beautiful kitty! My heart goes out to you and Dr. Nat in your loss. So sad to lose a 'friend'.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, April 2, 2011 - 01:01 pm:

That is one big chipmunk, very cute!

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat. It is always very difficult to lose a favorite pet, whether it is expected, or sudden. We lost one of our Lhasa Apsos several years ago, suddenly, and she was a young dog. Sending lots of positive thoughts and vibes to you.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Saturday, April 2, 2011 - 03:14 pm:

I love cats and I am sorry to hear of Dr. Nats' loss.

Yup! when I saw that chipmunk on the embankment next to our driveway, I thought, too, that was a pretty big one. Maybe it was a pregnant female.? There was a lot more snow when I took these pictures. I laugh at the first two pictures as if he/she is coming out to see if the coast is clear enough to come out. LOL. The chipmunk looks for Bill to come out and throw it some sunflower seeds now. They are fun to watch.

I am so sorry for your loss and I know what a furry feline friend a Norwegian Forest cat can be. I have a female named LeeLoo and she climbs my Christmas tree and sits at the top, and also tries to sneak outside everytime I open the door. As much trouble as she is I wouldn't trade her for any other breed.

By Donna (Donna) on Saturday, April 2, 2011 - 04:41 pm:

I am so sorry to hear of your cat's passing. Losing a pet is like losing a part of yourself. Lots of love invested....my sympathy.

LOVE the pictures today!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, April 2, 2011 - 04:41 pm:

I also love cats. Sorry to hear of your loss, Capt Paul & Dr. Nat.

Speaking of cats and chipmunks, my cat's been having fun with the chipmunks in our yard too. Unfortunately for the chipmunks, they've not been enjoying it, if you catch my drift :(

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Saturday, April 2, 2011 - 08:23 pm:

Thank you to everyone for your thoughts on this sad day. It's been a very hard day without my snuggly lap cat.
I am grateful to all the fine pasty.com folks for your sympathetic thoughts.

By RCW (Rcw) on Saturday, April 2, 2011 - 09:39 pm:

Add our condolences too Capt Paul. We ve been thru that too many time's in our 57 years. Sad day Im sure.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, April 2, 2011 - 11:29 pm:

Condolences from Berkley on the loss of your cat. We have had many over the last 45 years, but Jimmie the fat white cat is the only one who I would miss.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, April 3, 2011 - 09:55 am:

(a day late) I'm curious, RCW, is the 57 years your age or your wedding anniversary? We're coming up on our 57th wedding anniversary June 5th.:-)

By C Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Sunday, April 3, 2011 - 09:55 am:

Dr Nat, I am soooo sorry to hear about your kitty. I have three and would be so sad without them. Even when I'm up to my ears in cat messes, I am happy to have them. They love so unconditionally and completely. Just remember that cats were once worshipped as gods and they have not forgotten this. :-S

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, April 3, 2011 - 10:00 am:

LOL! "Gone2long", that's funny! But I do believe it....we have an 'ordinary' American shorthair who has certainly not forgotten. He's in his 12th year of 'worship'.;>

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Sunday, April 3, 2011 - 06:27 pm:

Thank you to everyone who sent us their condolences and well-wishes yesterday and today. It brings us great joy to know that people we have never met can share in our grieving for our big guy. It is starting to get better, but I don't believe we have many tears left to shed; he was definitely our little baby and he will surely be missed.......

Bobby

By Sheri (Sheri) on Sunday, April 3, 2011 - 06:39 pm:

So sorry to hear of your loss. I still remember when our Felix died several years ago. He was also a young cat and he died unexpectedly. He is buried in our pet cemetery by our house with lots of other pets of ours that have been our beloved companions. Our dogs, our cat, our bunnies, rats, guinea pigs, fiddler crabs, goldfish, newts -none of them are forgotten. We lost our albino rabbit named Bunnzy in January. He was twelve. They will be waiting.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, April 3, 2011 - 07:35 pm:

Oh my, Capt. Paul & Dr. Nat, what a beautiful, precious kitty. I love all animals but have to say that kitties are my weakness. BTW, you didn't tell us his name. We lost a 'marmalade' kitty, "Pete" 12 years ago and we still grieve over him, so the sorrow never really goes away but does become bearable with time.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, April 3, 2011 - 07:55 pm:

Dr. Nat and Cap. Paul,
I am so sorry to learn of your loss. Pets are such an important part
of the family. They give so much of themselves to us when they are
alive, and leave a hole in our hearts when they have to leave us.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Sunday, April 3, 2011 - 09:27 pm:

Sorry, his name was Robert, or Bobby or Bobcat for short. He wasn't really that young; at least 12 but probably closer to 15 which is the typical lifespan for a Wegie (we got him as an adult from a rescue in Las Vegas in 2004). It was funny because we already had 2 cats and didn't really want a third cat, but something about Bobby caught Nat's eye and while I was reluctant to get him, he was the best thing that has ever happened in our lives. It is amazing what life lessions we have learned from a 20 lb cat, especially now that he's gone. This has left a huge hole in our hearts that will never be filled again, but this will definitely be a life-changing event in our lives as well.

Again, thank you to everyone for your condolences and letting us ramble on; I don't believe mere words can express our gratitude to everyone on here.....
