I've had the privilege of taking a few of the shots on the Pasty Cam over the last 14 years, but not as many as my son Jonathan. Which years in today's review were taken by me, and which by Jonathan?

A bird and a half!! Is this over the limit? Do not follow where the path may lead, but go where there is no path and leave a trail...is it possible to bag two birds??

Yes it is, Pat/Glenda!! I remember bagging two (possibly three) birds when Hurricane Ike slammed the Texas shoreline a few years ago.....

Good Morning from Las Vegas, Nevada!!! We arrived last evening and immediately one could tell it was Spring Break as many of the students from colder climates have descended upon "Sin City" rather than go to Mexico; can't say I blame them really. We came in on the new Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge over Hoover Dam and I must, it is quite an engineering feat!! If I can get one edited down to the correct size, I'll post a photo later today.

Good to hear that Janie is up and around, and that the only complication is the maddening issue of the itching. J

Reader's Digest just began a second round of voting. I voted for Grand Marais, MI last round & they won. This time I'm voting for Ludington, MI. Let's help another Michigan town win - thanks!

Let's see if this works; it looks a lot better full sized....

Nice try Captain, but it ain't the UP. :)

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Monday, March 14, 2011 - 06:01 pm:

Hmmm, I wonder if a bridge like that the new Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge over (well not over, but approximately 1,500 feet south of) Hoover Dam would work as a new/alternative crossing for da Portage?

Perhaps at one of these sites?

1. A bridge across a relatively narrow section of the canal, but still taking advantage of the natural land forms, say from approximately the Houghton Canal Road at Schmidt Corner (el. ≈ 700 ft.) bearing approximately 88.4° (almost due east) to approximately 120 ft. east of M-203 (el. ≈ 700 ft.), a linear distance of ≈ 4000 ft, would provide approximately the same clearance above the canal as the present bridge. That would put the bridge roughly 4.25 miles from the west end of Houghton, and 3 miles west of the west end of "beautiful downtown Hancock".

3. A similar alternative, but a bit closer in, would be from the hill above the Houghton Canal Road between Coles Creek Rd. and Gedvillas Rd. (el. ≈ 700 ft.) across to the hill just south of the mouth of Swedetown Creek (el. ≈ 700 ft.), a linear distance of ≈ 3500-4000 ft. and roughly 2.5 miles from the west end of Houghton, and 1.7 miles west of the west end of "beautiful downtown Hancock".

Hey FRNash! Good to hear from you!!!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, March 14, 2011 - 09:08 pm:

Sorry to hear that Holidays, but sometimes one has to broaden their horizons a bit to know they indeed have the best. J

The only problem I see with a bridge like that over the Portage is that it would need to be quite high to clear the ships that pass through the canal. I believe I know where your going with this FRNash and in theory those locations would work, but goodness, would that be an enormous bridge (not to mention an enormous chunk of change to build)......

Hi Janie! Nice to see you too. I'm having a lot of trouble with my username and password. Mary's helping me with it though, so hopefully some time soon it'll be fixed.
