When you mention signs that spring is just around the corner, you automatically think of dirty snow, robins returning, buckets hanging from trees to collect the sap, etc., but Bill Haller sent in a different sign that you might not always notice... tree circles. That's right, I said tree circles... those are the indentations around the trunk of the tree, from the sun warming the bark and melting the snow around it in a circle. When the Keweenaw winter is in full swing, you don't see this phenomenon, but when spring is waiting in the wings, it starts to appear. Any time now Spring, we're waiting!

I was checking that out down here one day....all the tree trunks were exposed.....grass in a circle around each trunk was showing. Come on Spring! (Mud season!)

I've been seeing 'tree circles' for years but never thought about the reason. Simple but interesting. Snow predicted for parts of Ohio tomorrow.....hope the prognosticators are wrong!
