Back in the 40s or perhaps even earlier, there
were ski jumping competitions throughout the UP.
Ripley was won and Ishpheming and Iron Mountain
were two others. There were other jumps around the
UP but these 3 were most popular. Ripley had limitations on how long a jump you could make because the landing wasn't long enough. Iron Mountain had the bigger hill and drew skiers from around the world. Seems those big meets were held
in March. They were broadcast on the radio,too.
The sky flying hill near Ironwood is vulnerable to
winds on the landing and is pretty well unused.
It is something else to climb it in the summer especially if you fear heights.

Traversing the ski hills in Iron County brought back great memories. I remember the moguls at Indian Head in Iron County. Rough duty but I made it. Didn't break a leg but my friend did. Great memories.
