How many people do you see in the picture at the Polar Bear Dive?

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 - 06:40 am:

About 80, but my eyes aren't that good.
Good morning!

We see 96 and a half people...

Worth at least half a bird

1, 2, skip a few, 99, 100?? J

Good chilly morning!! 17 in the tropics of SE Texas with a wind chill of 3. It was nice in that I had no arguements from the dog this morning getting him back in the house after his morning inspection of the backyard.......

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 - 07:32 am:

No shadow, early Spring.

By sometimesyooper (Nancyd) on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 - 07:33 am:

It's -13 here in Evergreen, CO. That a real temperature, not windchill. I don't even want to know the windchill.

Here in Mishawaka, IN it's Blizzard Time! I think nearly everything is closed for the day.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 - 09:34 am:

Yes, Charlotte, Chi town gets all the press, but you get socked too!

Be careful out there!

By FJL (Langoman) on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 - 09:56 am:

Can't get out the doors. Drifted shut. 6ft. and wide. Homebound but warm.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 - 10:16 am:

FJL...me too. Can only see out thru a little clearing in the storm window. Looks like the main drift is almost up to the bedroom window. Can't budge the door open either. My lawn furnitre is almost completely covered. Just pray the power doesn't go out! Doggone...the sun is peeking out occasionly. The roar of the wind was what I imagine Sharon Smith talks about "the Lake talking" when I was going to sleep last night. Going to hunker down and keep busy today.

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 - 11:11 am:

My first Bird! What a thrill! When I saw nothing but empty space after Charlie's post, I could scarcely believe my luck, and when I saw I'd squeaked my post on first, I knew I'd never be the same. As I'd suspected for years, I can now see unnamed colors, and have been given new insights, such as "all roads converge on the three pasties on the bottom shelf of the fridge".

But, all credit must be given to the snowstorm, which made me want to check the radar loop extra early and then check the Pasty Cam. I suspect the weather had the added benefit of putting Capt. Paul into a low-temperature torpor, thus knocking a key bird-snatching competitor onto the sidelines for a critical 32 minutes.

Also, there's the bonus of getting the Blue Flash on an easy-to-remember day, although I don't think this will cause me to change my personal power creature preference from brook trout to groundhog.

That's probably enough giddy enthusiasm, eh? On a more level-headed note, things were oddly quiet here on the dune last night and this morning. We never heard the wind through the night, and part of the reason is that it stayed in the northeast, which leaves us in the lee of lots of trees to the east. We got piles of snow that have drifted in places, but for the most part, this has been just a quiet, very heavy snowfall.

Have a great day, everyone. Stay warm and safe!

By Barbara Mosley (Lunarchi) on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 - 11:40 am:

We're home for the day, iced in after a winter storm in New Jersey.
However, that is nothing compared to what I have read in the other
posts! You would all probably laugh at what we consider to be a
very tough winter. Happy day to everyone... stay warm where ever
you are.

For all you snowed-in folks ~ Grand Marais' lead in the Reader's Digest contest is shrinking just as the finish line is in sight.

Please go to the Pasty Cam Home Page and vote to help GM start the rebuilding of their harbor to protect fishermen and boaters along the Shipwreck Coast.

Thanks!

No not really. Remember, I am from the Copper Country; it takes more than a mere Blue Norther to put me in a torpor!!! ;-)

Actually, it's more like my 40 mile commute at that time of the morning that keeps me from bagging that wiley ole' bird before 7 or so.....

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 - 01:34 pm:

Dunerat welcome to the bird club. Now you have to snag two in a row.

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 - 04:23 pm:

Problems at NMU, everything has been resolved. You can't get away with anything UP here.

Feel so sorry for Egypt, get rid of Mubarak. Don't consider this political, consider it as a backing.

One more thing, spring will be early this year, Phil didn't see his shadow. That means spring will be May, not June this year. :)

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 - 05:37 pm:

Really like the 2001 photo. Looks like my roofline when I come and go here. Pretty but dangerous.

By Sldmi (Sldmi) on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 - 06:39 pm:

Dunerat - I loved your response to your early bird. I felt that way too , and continue to feel so giddy when I very rarely snag a bird. I've just never been able to put it into words like you did. Congrats and good luck tomorrow!

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 - 08:41 pm:

Added note from Mishawaka, IN. The weather guy said tonight our total snow for the winter is 92.6 inches. Above our normal of 77 inches(I think, I know it's around that). January's snow this year is in 2nd place all time. Bested only by the Big Blizzard of '78. Then my boys didn't go back to school for 2 weeks. They loved it.
