Jan Dalquist sent these photos from a visit to McLain State Park, here in the Keweenaw last week when we experienced those few days of unseasonably warm temperatures. It was looking quite a bit like spring, if you kept your eyes on the land part of the park, but if you turned toward Lake Superior to check out the view, you see that spring is a little ways off yet. Especially with the chilly temperatures and snow that have returned to the Keweenaw.

By the way, Jan is equally skilled in indoor photography as she is with outdoor scenes. We featured some of her shots in Shoebox Memory not too long ago about Pipe Organs of the Keweenaw.

Can anyone tell me the current state of the old Coast Guard station that was at Upper Entry, right next to McLain Park? I know it was abandoned years ago, but are the buildings still there, and what is happening to the property itself? Was it ever sold, or taken over by McLain? Any info appreciated.( I was stationed there eons ago). Thanks!

The north entry Coast Guard station was abandoned in 1991, at which point it was temporarily relocated to Hancock. Later, IIRC--- it was about 1997 or 1998 or so---a new USCG station was constructed at Dollar Bay.

Awesome pics!

I've always wanted to live in the UP, everything
just looks so peaceful.

I'm so ready to move, the hard part is talking my
wife into moving someplace with snow, we live in
South Carolina now.

Maybe some day I'll get to move to the UP (I hope).

George, at least go visit for a few weeks in the summer. It is a beautiful area, and you can find places to stay just by exploring this site.

Does anyone know where I can buy chairs like the ones along the lake at McLain? My wife and I love them and would like to build or buy one for the yard.
