Another exciting Winter Carnival concluded yesterday here in the Copper Country. It's always a special time for the Pasty Cam, because we remember this daily feature originated during the 1997-98 Winter Carnival, with the first picture posted at the end of that February (and we haven't missed a day since.)

The Winter Carnival itself goes way back to 1922, which you can hear about in this week's Pasty Cameo, a little bit longer than most of our Cameos, but well worth the time. So grab your favorite hot beverage and let's watch it together. Our thanks to the folks at Blue Key for such a great production. The statue above - one of my favorites - is actually seen in the video, a shot taken by the guy who 'primed the pump' for the Pasty Cam fourteen winters ago, my son Jonathan Hopper.

In just a couple of weeks we'll be starting the 14th year of these daily visits... and welcome your suggestions and photo contributions for the coming year (email pastycam@pasty.com)

Have a good week :o)

Thanks so much for all the work and effort the "Pasty team" puts into sharing the news, events and history of the Keweenaw. You deserve a very well done!

This is probably my favorite too...I love the way Tech and their hard working students (I promise you...you won't catch me outside at 3am, and 10 below zero, playing with water and snow!!!) ALWAYS put together such stunning, mammoth sized creations for everyone to enjoy!

Unbelieveable! WELL DONE!! And every single year as well!

(AND I think Blue Key should be BLUE RIBBONS for everyone involved AND that should automate an A+ for all classes they are involved in! JMHO)

Charlie...I can't get the Cameo Audio portion to sound right....or is it just my old dinosaur? Although, I did get the Day in History ok.

Is anyone else having trouble with the cameo burping really horribly bad? Its trying to load as its playing so its very jerky.

Ya yes the ice statues at Tech! I remember taking my sweetie there on a cold Saturday afternoon. The fact it was cold made it easier to hold her hand.
Happy Valintine Day SLJH

I had no problems with the Cameo. Thank you for the link. We were not able to get up there for it. But, Congratulations to all who participated in the work! And, congratulations to my youngest son, who is a freshman, and his dorm's team, Da Nort (DHH), for their placing second in the Residence Halls category this year. It is a whole lot of work, every night for the 30-day statues! But they had a lot of fun.

Our apologies for the overload on the video. According to our logs, between about 9am - noon Pasty Central often gets 4-5,000 visitors. Today so many of you clicked on the Cameo link - with its huge video file - that it didn't take long to bog down, not streamed from our servers, but rather from Michigan Tech's. We had to take the link down temporarily.

It is a really neat presentation, of such quality to be on some national outlet, like the History Channel.

The statues beautiful. The cold weather and plenty of snow gave them much to work with. They just glistened from being able to use the cold weather to their advantage. Good work TECH students, we enjoyed them I bet the overnighter was a cold one!!!!!! Only the young could put up with it and present us with such beauty.

Wow! Wow! Wow! What an amazing Pasty Cameo. I was away in
Lower Michigan visiting my father, so I didn't see it until now.
Thanks, Charlie. Great choices of music too.

Got to see the snow statues in person this weekend. The detail and size is very impressive. I know the work that goes with these as I did this when I was at MTU. Wonderful but very cold memories.

I find it amusing that the Pasty Cam began (almost)
on my last day of classes of Tech. I finished the
academic portion at the end of Winter Quarter 1998
but somehow stuck around until May.

Visiting this site each day (and trust me, I have
seen EVERY picture ever posted here since) makes me
feel like I never left.

Keep up the good work, and good morning from
Stuttgart.
