No road trip to the tip of the Keweenaw is complete without a stop to check out the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse and grounds. That's just what Lindsay White and family did recently. It was an overcast, wintry looking day, which gave the lighthouse a mystical appearance with the beacon slicing through the sky. Then Lindsay's little ones perched on the anchor that sits on the campus grounds there. Does anyone know what ship this anchor is from and whether it has any significance to the Eagle Harbor station?

The last photo is from a clearer day, taken by E. Neil Harri. From this angle, it looks like there's no water between the camera and the lighthouse. No matter what direction you take a picture of this light from, it's always an intriguing landmark.

Gee, I guess I get to weigh in first, eh? (I'm up at this wee hour because our son just got back from Texas after being delayed by winter weather...in TX! Ha! The irony....

I never tire of lighthouses. Thanks 4 sharing.

The anchor is certainly anchoring those two kids in their seats. ;)

Eagle Harbor Lighthouse . . . always my favorite in any season. Nice pics!

The Eagle Harbor Lighthouse is owned by the Keweenaw County Historical Society (KCHS), although the U. S. Coast Guard continues to operate the light at the top of the tower. A wonderful way to help support the E. H. Lighthouse is through membership (i.e., see link, below) in KCHS---the Society is grateful for every new and renewing member.

Thank you!

What an absolutely beautiful lighthouse picture, Lindsay. Thanks, too, Neil for your unique pics. How lucky we are on this end to reap the benefits of photographers such as yourselves! Keep up the good work.

Anyone know when the Michigan Tech Ice Sculptures will be complete? Are any completed this weekend?

Thanks!
Nate

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, February 5, 2011 - 11:14 am:

I believe Winter Carnival is next week, Nate. The statues should be complete Thursday morning for judging so next weekend would be a good time to visit.

By Nate (Nalwine) on Saturday, February 5, 2011 - 11:21 am:

Thanks for the info Capt Paul!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, February 5, 2011 - 11:48 am:

Yes, Tech's "Allnighter", when the sculptures are completed is Wednesday, complete with food and entertainment. The statues must be finished by Thursday morning, Feb 10. (The Winter Carnival begins on Feb 9 and runs through Feb 12, with lots of other activities going on, as well.)

Jane, what's the address again?

Was the anchor from the City of Bangor?
I think the light station and the entire
grounds are wonderful and stop each time I am
in the U.P. I love the old car in the garage from the ship wreck. Quite the story. The volunteers do a wonderful job. The U.P really
is a great place to spend a week in the summertime and I'd never miss doing that.

We took a ride down College Ave. this morning and they were working on a couple of them. It is incredible to see them in progress, if you will. To see them now and at the end of it all, is awsome. It has been in the 30's and 20's the last few days, that they look like they a were kinda melting. Can not wait til they are done. I think tomorrow, Sunday, we are going to take a ride back down there when there is less traffic.
