Tom, there's many different things that interact to cause changes in Earth's climate. One of the things is, indeed, changes in earth’s orbit. These are known as Milankovitch cycles, named for the scientist who postulated that these variations in the orbit had an impact on climate. The earth’s orbit changes in three ways: eccentricity, obliquity, and precession. Eccentricity is the change from a circular to an elliptical orbit. The obliquity is the angle of the tilt of earth’s axis. It varies between about 22 and 24.5 degrees. The precession, also called the precession of the equinoxes, is the wobble of earth’s axis. Together, these three things vary and can cause changes in the climate.
The earth is not heading towards becoming a “dead planet” any time soon. Someday, however, our sun will die, and so will our planet. But this won’t happen for a few billion years, so I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it.
Thank you to everyone for asking about my lecture. I appreciate the kind thoughts.
