Yesterday Edie and I drove from Eagle River to Hancock - to work on the Lift Bridge Cam - along the snow-blown route that took us through Calumet, on the street shown here (from about 20 years ago). Jim Alain did a little time-lapse back in the early 90's to show the contrast after the leaves vanished and the snow appeared. It's from a couple of spots along Calumet Avenue, just north of Calumet High School. Jim calls it the two seasons of the Copper Country: Snow and No Snow.

We worked on the Bridge Cam, but still have some tweaking to do. If you want a higher resolution of this shot from yesterday afternoon, click here.

bcam
Speaking of time-lapse, when the Bridge Cam replacement is complete, we should have a much better history of the Lift Bridge, with a browseable archive of each day. Who knows? You may be able to see yourself someday, shivering in the land of Snow.

Have a good week :o)

Great pictures today Jim

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 08:33 am:

That's quite a contrast!!! I was also thinking about sunlight the other day. The UP's longest day (sunrise 6:05 and sunset 9:55) provides almost 16 hours of time where the sun is actually up above the horizon. If you calculate the time where it is actually "light" out it would be closer to 19 hours!!! By contrast, December's doldrums of darkness provide only only 9.5 hours of actual "sun time." (8:39 sunrise - 5:13 sunset) Anyone yoopers suffering from "seasonal affective disorder?" It was also interesting to compare Bergland, the town furthest west in the time zone to copper harbor, the town furthest north. Which do you think has longer and shorter days? (copper harbor has slightly less in winter and more in summer, about 12 minutes or so). here's the link to calculate your exact times at your zip code. Calculate length of days

By Norma in Midland (Normainmidland) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 08:44 am:

By NKR (Nkr) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 09:10 am:

Good morning from Mishawaka IN. Yea! The Bridge Cam is back. Looks good. Its 1° this morning here in Mishawaka and we have alot of snow, but not as much as you have in the UP.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 09:10 am:

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 09:32 am:

72 in my office don't care what it is outside. Jimmie the fat white cat is spread out over the floor vent enjoying the grandkids visit. Only cat we have ever had that comes out when the little ones are here. Justins family including his wife spent the night here. we have a leaded glass front door and the sun is out making rainbows all over the front room. Jack and Emma are using a magnifying glass to check the rainbows out. Oh to be young again where rainbows fasinate you.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 10:52 am:

Maybe I'm short sighted but I can't see any difference in the bridge cam from one time to the other. Well, except for the parking lot of some motel. Some one tell me the big changes. What am I missing. Of course I'm there only every few years.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 11:01 am:

brrrrrrrr
why is the page so wide?

Mary says: Should be fixed now!

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 11:04 am:

on the bridge cam ..the pic looks good, but will it be live or recorded?
Right now it is from yesterday.

The question up above about not being able to see changes..if you look everyday...it is different for sure...maybe some cars on the bridge, maybe snowing, maybe raining, maybe sunny, sometimes you catch a boat ...etc etc ...
especially if you can refresh or if it is live

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 11:26 am:

Nice pic, especially in zoom mode!

By sometimesyooper (Nancyd) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 11:35 am:

A bizarre 35 degrees in Evergreen, CO - with snow on the ground. Guess there will be a bit of a January thaw today!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 11:47 am:

Wait til the summer when you catch a picture of the lift bridge all the way up with a boat going under it.

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 11:53 am:

Although I am not wild about our temp, here in mid-Florida, I feel almost guilty to report our temp at 52 degrees and very sunny. Should get up to about 70 by mid-afternoon. Really regret not having any snow to shovel, too.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 11:58 am:

We are at 3 degrees here in Lansing, but the sun it doing everything it can to try to warm things up. The cats have found the sunny spots. Enjoy your day!

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 12:09 pm:

the current cam at 12:05 is mighty bright and washed out looking. But it still looks cool ..and at huge size is very nice for future wallpaper

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 12:12 pm:

What happened to the bridge cam picture. It looks like it over exposed or the sun is right in the camera. It is 12:05 pm shot.

Thank You for the new camera to the bridge. ;O)

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 12:12 pm:

12:40 pm picture of the liftbridge is great.

By Sharon I. Smith (Sharons) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 12:51 pm:

Jeff & Judy - I get my sun and moon data from the Naval Observatory website (and so does the Weather Underground, I think):

http://www.usno.navy.mil/USNO/astronomical-applications/data-services

There, you can get the data for one day or for an entire year. They have sunrise & sunset, all the twilights (3), length of day, and rise and set of the moon. I print them out, so I can see how things change over the year. If you live in a town of any size, you can input it, but if you live out in the woods, like here in Copper Harbor, you have to input your latitude & longitude (47º 28'N, 87º 53'W). If you have a GPSS and you're really geeky, you can input your exact coordinates.

They also have other neat data, if it interests you. Yes, I'm a geek. I admit it.

By JoAnne, Washington State (Davejostef) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 01:36 pm:

First off, our temp in Port Orchard, WA: 43 degrees at 10:34 AM. Probably get to 45 today. Not bad for January!

Secondly, Sharon, thanks for the cool link! I've had fun looking at all the numbers! I definately will save that for future reference. Appreciate your adding that to the mix here.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 01:38 pm:

39.5 degrees in Hockley, Texas this morning, which is better than the last two mornings when we've had a good frost on the ground. Unfortunitely where we are located, we seem to be at the battle front between the cool air to the north and the influence of the Gulf, so it never seems to stay the same for very long.......

Oh, and GO PACK GO!!

By S. Hill (Azfinn) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 04:53 pm:

Reading the temps back home, I'm feeling a little
guilty to say that here in Phoenix the sun is
shining, skies are clear, a little windy, and 71
degrees in my neighborhood (according to
Wunderground.com). Lots of oranges almost ripe on
our tree. Go Packers!!

By Theresa R. Brunk (Trb0013) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 07:04 pm:

Temp was -20º this morning here in the Soo. Got up to -7º and now it is dropping again. I don't care the Packers are on the way to the Superbowl!!

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 08:28 pm:

its very warm in Wisconsin...especially since
the PACK BEAT THE BEARS and are going to the SUPERBOWL !!!!!

By tim larsen (Starrnote) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 08:36 pm:

Cmon all you YOOPER PACKER BACKERS! GO PACK GO! GO PACK GO! GO PACK GO! WOOO! WOOO! SUPERBOWL BOUND!!!

By Christopher Lynn (X87lynn) on Monday, January 24, 2011 - 10:09 pm:

Somewhere I have a picture of myself in the bridge cam. It was the summer of 2005, I had to stand in the same spot for approx 15 min. to wait for the picture to update, & then run into the hotel & call my girlfriend to see if she got the picture saved on her computer.

By Christopher Lynn (X87lynn) on Monday, January 24, 2011 - 10:39 pm:
