The craziness begins again this week as mid-winter festivals start to pop up all across the U.P. Before we're done there will be dog races, wife-carrying races, and outhouse races. There will be snow statues and fireworks, parades and polar bear dives, food, fun and frolicking in the snow.
Some of the upcoming events include Heikinpäivä, which actually kicks off tomorrow with the world-famous Nisu class at Zion Lutheran Church, and many events to follow, leading up to the big parade in Hancock on the last Saturday of January.
This coming weekend the City of Negaunee will repeat the Heikki Lunta Winterfest on January 15-16. It's actually a legend that was born in the Copper Country, which you can read about here.
And looking ahead to next month, preparations are underway for the ever-popular Trenary Outhouse Races. I'm sure some of the sleek new competitors in this year's race are being fine-tuned as we speak.
It may be cold and snowy here in the U.P., but it's never dull.
Thanks for that history lesson, Charlie. I remember owning a small record of the song back in the day.
I look forward to being in the UP for Heikinpaiva one of these days. (Sorry I don't know how to make the umlauts).
