Some nights here in the Copper Country, you don't even have to see the snow on the ground to know it's a wintry evening. You can just look up to the sky and see the frosty air surrounding the moon, like today's top photo from Aimee Rathbun. Kind of makes you shiver, because the picture portrays the cold of the scene so well.
The bottom photo is from Brita Haapala and it shows one of my favorite phases of the moon. I have no clue what the technical name for this phase is, but it's always been a fingernail moon to me. There are so many faces that the moon puts on, no wonder there was always talk as a kid about the "man in the moon." I don't hear that much anymore... wonder what happened to him? :->

My wife loves moons and taking pictures of them. That first one might be what the Irish call the Glomin(spelling), from the song Romin in the Glomin. It was explained to me as getting dark but still able to see outlines. Anybody help me out here???

Not sure about the song, but I remember being up on Brockway Mountain on a clear moonless night and their being enough starshine to read a newspaper.

Roamin' in the Gloamin'
I've seen lots of bonnie lassies travellin' far and wide,
But my heart is centred noo on bonnie Kate McBride;
And altho' I'm no a chap that throws a word away,
I'm surprised mysel' at times at a' I've got to say

Chorus:
Roamin' in the gloamin' on the bonnie banks o' Clyde,
Roamin' in the gloamin' wi' ma lassie by ma side,
When the sun has gone to rest, that's the time that I like best,
O, it's lovely roamin' in the gloamin'!

One nicht in the gloamin' we were trippin' side by side.
I kissed her twice, and asked her once if she would be my bride;
She was shy, and so was I, we were baith the same,
But I got brave and braver on the journey comin' hame.

Chorus

Last nicht efter strollin' we got hame at half-past nine.
Sittin' at the kitchen fire I asked her to be mine.
When she promised I got up and danced the Hielan' Fling;
I've just been to the jewellers and I've picked a nice wee ring.

There's another song that goes "In the gloamin', oh my darlin', when the lights are dim and low...", I don't know the name of it but it was one of many songs my mama used to sing while doing housework/cooking/etc. I loved to hear mama sing 'cause I knew that everything was alright if she was singing. :D

Pretty pictures today! There's a certain skill in taking good moon photos. I never seem to get it right. Love the pics!

Please remember to vote for the Calumet Theatre on the Pepsi Refresh website:

http://www.refresheverything.com/saveabeautiful110yroldtheatre

It would be a real loss if the Theatre closed because of the roof leaks. Be sure to watch the video at this website.

Mary
The proper term for that phase of the moon is
"Waxing Cresent".

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Friday, December 10, 2010 - 09:28 pm:

I took a pic of the moon last night almost like the 2nd one today. Through the bare branches of the maple tree here in the yard. A waxing cresent (growing) toward the 1st quarter moon. Odd to say 1st quarter when it looks like a half moon. But it has to do with the number of days. A moon cycle is 28 days so each 7 days is 1/4 of 28. 'Nough said, 'eh?

Link to a moon phase calendar:

http://www.moonconnection.com/moon_phases_calendar.phtml

Some folks "work" according to the phase of the moon. It's pretty interesting when you research that info.

And Mary..most folks are too busy texting anymore. Faces are buried in the electronics. Or they live in such polluted areas, they can't see the stars or the moon! We are beyond Blessed to get to see what we do!!
