Houghton County Historical Museum in Lake Linden was the place to be this past weekend, if you wanted a ride on the Santa Express and then a spot on Santa's lap to tell him all your hopes and wishes for Christmas morning. Melanie Hakala Rossi was there with some good looking young fellows and snapped some shots as they took a ride on the train and then visited with Santa afterwards. Look at those rosy cheeks and contented smiles. That's the result of time spent outdoors, having fun in the Copper Country!

Sweet pictures! I'd say that is the Yooper equivalent to the "Polar Express"!:)

Kids enjoying the day out, red cheeks and all. It is ironic that today I have over 100 Yooper railroad depots for sale on the internet......

I wish I could take my grandkids on that train. They would absolutely love it! We took them to the IMAX Theatre in Dearborn last Saturday to see the Polar Express in 3D. It was really awesome! The adults loved it as much as the kids.

The fourth picture Coming Around is what I see out my bedroom window.

"The fourth picture Coming Around is what I see out my bedroom window." Wow Dave, are you ever lucky to see that view everyday (the Portage I mean).

Cindy You can take your grandchildren on a train ride next door to the IMAX in Dearborn. They offer steam engine driven train rides at Greenfield Village. One of their engines is the Torch Lake from the Calumet and Hecla Railroad. Another train ride is the North Pole Express from Owosso. This year it is being pulled by a diesel engine as the Perre Marquette 1225 steam engine is undergoing a federally mandated overhaul. The PM 1225 was the actual engine that was the model for the Polar Express movie.

It is Torch Lake here in lake Linden..Can anyone tell us how it got it's name.? I am thinking from it's shape maybe..
By Bob Jewell, Farmington Hills (Rjewell) on Friday, December 10, 2010 - 12:46 am:
David: I've heard that Torch Lake was named because the local indians fished at night with torches and spears.

Oops, I meant Torch Lake.
