I would have thought that the Canada Geese have gone south for the winter, but yesterday there were three of them swimming around Torch Lake in Lake Linden, dipping their heads in the cold water to grab something to eat now and then. Maybe this trio will take off for warmer climes in the next few days or were just taking a break on their way south already. Either way, they better start flapping their wings and get going before they get frozen into the lake.

Also spotted this Eagle yesterday, sitting high in the trees near a farm pond. Most likely it was waiting to capture something for dinner, maybe grab a fish out of the pond or perhaps catch a mouse in the surrounding grass. Seems like the Eagles stick around the Keweenaw all year round... must be Yooper birds. ;->

I think the Eagles ARE Yoopers! I like that plan, Mary! I was driving along Superior one day, and was watching an Eagle out playing over the water...just doing his loop-de-loops...so beautiful to watch!

Looks like the calumet cam got bumped as it points down to the brick street crosswalk and i dont think that is the intentional shot that they are looking for.

Mary, on our DVD movie, "Fly Away Home", about the man who helped some orphaned Canada geese to migrate south using his ultra-lite plane, said that the geese don't migrate south like they used to because they find plenty to feed on up north now. We have a couple of geese that come to our pond each spring to 'procreate', and pretty much stay around all summer.

I remember hearing/reading someplace that some species of birds sort of shift places. The birds in Canada come here or a bit farther south and "our" summer birds migrate further south. So, according to this scenario, the blue jay you see here in winter may be a Canadian summer dweller and ours are south somewhere now. Don't know if this is true for Canada geese or Bald Eagles. Anybody else heard of this concept. Or am I daft (once again)? ;-)

We have Canada Geese where I live, 2.

Yes Canada Geese nowadays as with several other species will often over winter wherever they find open water and adequate food nearby. Up in Bellaire (NWLP) where the Cedar River flows thru town there is a flood plain with open water, snags etc. all winter. We always find Swans, Mallards, Black Ducks, Goldeneyes, Buffleheads, Mergansers, Eagles, Kingfishers and even Great Blue Herons there all winter!
Yes there is something to the overlap shift mentioned. It can vary greatly but does happen with many species.
