It's opening day of firearm deer season here UP North and today's photo is something that is a necessity out at the deer camp... the outhouse. Eric Stewart snapped the shot of this privy and it looks to be a bit fancier than most, since it even has a porch or deck on it. All you hunters, please be safe and have a good hunt.

Note there's no snow in the top photo... that's what it's been like here in Lake Linden over the weekend. We did get some snow flying in the air, but everything melted as it hit the ground. Not so for other parts of the U.P., where the snow amounts varied from just a dusting like the middle photo from Ashley Byykkonen, showing their swing with a smattering of flakes upon it, to Daniel Nelson's photo, which gives us an idea of the snow-cover around these parts. His swing is completely white and matching the ground around it. Winter is just around the corner.

Now remember, these were current as of the typing of these notes, so there could be more, less or none, depending on how the temps have carried us through. Living here UP North, we know it won't be long before we’re walking around in boots, gloves and toques.

120 miles from me in the north-central Iowa areas recieved 8-10 in. of snow. Too much, too soon!

Outhouses are wonderful! We used to call the one at our family's summer cottage "The Wee Hoose." I just finished a book where they called theirs the "Taj-Ma-Hole." Up the Snake River Hill on the right hand side heading East, almost hidden, is a brick one! A church camp I am familiar with called the girls' six-holer "Egypt." I'm sure other folks have unique names that they could recall.

Nice...I can really appreciate the location of the outhouse, right at the gate entrance. You get to go when you arrive and go when you go.

I wonder if all you yoopers know which way the outhouse door should swing, in or out?

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, November 15, 2010 - 02:02 pm:

Alex....the outhouse is there as it doubles for the guard shack as well.

Swing to the right?

By Donna (Donna) on Monday, November 15, 2010 - 04:06 pm:

Well...I left Baraga this morning, and there was no snow on the ground. I went to Houghton, Hancock and Hubbell and home...there was darn near a blizzard going on up there, and I got back to Baraga's bare ground!

GOOD LUCK HUNTER's and be safe!

I told a friend to tell Farmer I was gonna call him at 8am this morning and to have his phone on LOUD! LOL

Ahh. The first snow of the season.

When I was staying at the NMU field station south of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, I came across an outhouse that was made of empty wine and liquor bottles. It seems like it was located somewhere around Cusino Lake; maybe along the the Melstrand Road or the Wolf Lake Truck Trail not too far from Gemini Lakes. It was a real work of art.
