We've been enjoying an unseasonably warm November here in the Keweenaw, which means that folks can get out and about a bit more than you normally would if it were cold and stormy. Danielle Mahoney took advantage of that warmer weather for a visit to Superior's shores, taking note especially of the tall pines and those that have succumbed to the strong winds. The Big Lake was doing some rocking and rolling the day these photos were snapped, but not worked up to the "gales of November," just white capped rollers.
On this day, 35 years ago, the winds were howling and Lake Superior was tossing and turning much more than Danielle's photos... the anniversary of the sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, as noted in November 10th Day in History. Twenty-nine crew members perished in that disaster, and we remember them and their families today with this Pasty Cameo.
P.S. Happy Birthday to the Marines! Thank you and Semper Fi!

Today's Cameo is one of the best clips! If you haven't seen either of the tributes to the Crew and the Edmund Fitzgerald at the White Fish Point museum or the Valley Camp at the Soo, I encourage you to must see. Great displays at both locations!

Nice pictures, Danielle. Cotton, I've been thinking of you today. A picture of your hands on the Fitzgerald's bell was in the Freep on Sunday, I think it was. It may still be there. Take care!

CNN has a really good story on the Fitzgerald on their web page today.
Today we remember those who perished aboard the EDMUND FITZGERALD and also the thousand of others that died aboard great lakes freighters over the last 200 years.(including a cousin of ours)
I will be giving a short talk this evening at River Rouge of my experiences aboard the FITZ during its short maiden season in 1958.

Also thinking of Pam Johnson today, her father was the 'replacement' cook on the Fitz. that fateful day! This day must bring back terrible memories for so many families. May God comfort Pam, Cheryl and all the others!

Thanks, Neil. I was writing the same sentiment when your note popped up. I got a card from my daughter: "Once a Marine, Always a Marine." Semper Fi indeed!!
