Cindy Freeman took a walk around the Point Iroquois Lighthouse grounds recently and snapped us a wonderful shot of the building architecture and fall surroundings. Even without much color this is a striking photo. Located near Brimley, MI, this light guides many a boater around the tricky entrance/exit to the St. Mary's river.

Cindy's next two photos were taken at the Soo Locks with the American Integrity just arriving and entering the lock. After making it through, she'll sail on the St. Mary's river, into Lake Superior, passing right in front of the Point Iroquois Light in the top photo. It has guided many a boat into and out of the river mouth at the southeast end of Whitefish Bay, since it's completion in the fall of 1890. One of the numerous U.P. Lighthouses that act as beacons of night, dotting Superior's shores.

That lighthouse is one of the nicest I have visited.

I have not visited this lighthouse. Have to put it on my to do list. It's a list that gets longer and longer and I have less and less time to accomplish them all.

Yes, the lighthouse is right on the Lakeshore Drive and has ample parking. In addition you can climb the tower ~ amazing view from the top.

The lighthouse is very accessible by road. It is right on the highway. It is one of my favorite spots. If you are in the area be sure to visit Mission Hill near Bay Mills. The view of Spectacle Lake, Monacle Lake and Superior is great.Mission Hill is also the final resting place of the 8 sailors from the sinking of the Myron in 1919.

Who owns the lighthouse?

Some of you may have noticed my post last Thursday evening about seeing the lights of at least two lake boats off Muskegon, unusually close together. Turns out, according to boatnerd, that was the H Lee White, lightering the Indiana Harbor, which had gone aground on the bar outside the breakwater.

Last night, about 8:40, I saw another thing I've never seen before -- a big boat going out with only the rear superstructure lights on. No deck lights at all; only the red bow light on. I can't tell for sure from boatnerd which vessel it might have been. Could have been the Samual de Champlain/Innovation, but the superstructure looked bigger than that. Might have been the Indiana Harbor heading back out. Does anyone know if the boats are supposed to run deck lights all the time, or is it optional? What if it's a tug/barge combination?

I just logged on and saw my pictures up today. Thanks, Mary. I could just spend forever browsing around the U.P. in all seasons. Years ago, my in-laws had a cottage in Brimley, and we passed Pt. Iroquois on the way there. At that time it was abandoned and boarded up. It was hard to understand how such a beautiful structure in such a gorgeous setting was left to the elements. I was very happy when it was restored and opened up for the public to enjoy. That was the beginning of my obsession with lighthouses. It's also very beautiful in the winter.

That is one of our favorite lighthouses, nice fall pictures of it. We were there in July for a run on the beach and looking at the lighthouse.

Fantastic, I've never been in the Eastern U.P.
I'll have to spend a week over there sometime
so this is something new for the list.

As i recall, many years ago there was some controversy as to the ownership of the lighthouse ~ back when it was still boarded up. The specifics of how the ownership struggle was resolved escape me but it has obviously been well taken care of since then

The lighthouse is owned by the US Forest Service. It is part of the Hiawatha National Forest. The Bay Mills/Brimley Historical Society participated in the restoration.

If that's the lighthouse west of the Soo, I've been in it. Very Impressive.

Dunerat: Deck lights are not required lighting.
