A favorite part of my day is preparing "Day in History" (that is, when I'm not overwhelmed with all of the other challenges of Pasty.NET and Pasty Central). This morning's minute reminded me of Carrie Jacobs-Bond, and how I've wanted to revisit the story of this unique former resident of the U.P... Edie and I had some fun producing this Pasty Cameo, with scenes from the Pasty Cam archives accompanied by the haunting melody of "I Love You Truly." A good overview of her life can be found at ParlorSongs.com, where you can hear more of Carrie Jacob-Bond's music, and see some of the 175 songs she and her son published.

Though the pictures and Cam Notes were late getting on (we still haven't missed a day :), we've received a number of notes in response to the Pasty Cameo. Thanks for the thanks, and enjoy the stroll down memory lane.

Have a good week :o)

What a great Cameo! I work in that old train depot building in
Houghton (now Aspirus Keweenaw Medical Arts) and we have a lot
of old pictures in it but not that one! Thanks!

She certainly had her share of sorrows. In reading the Parlor Song notes and Wikipedia, her first published song had a verse:

I dropped my dolly - broke her head,
Some one told me my doll's dead,
Tell me dolly is it true,
I can no more play with you?

And then, years later, her husband fell on ice, hit his head and died.

Another tragic note on Wikipedia tells that her son took his own life, with a record of "End of a Perfect Day" playing in the room.

Carrie Jacobs-Bond's home used to be situated across the side street from the former Iron River High School. It is now located at the Iron County Historical Museum in Caspian, MI.

sounds like she must have had a tragic life, but as the picture states, her and her son started out together, and virtue of the human process, ended up together too

Is it just me or does her son look like her clone? If it weren't such an early photograph, I'd think it had been photoshopped to put her face on his head. Eerie resemblance.

listening to 'I Love You Truly' sounds like the records I listen to from time to time on my moms wind up Victrola I have.

My computer will not let me listen to the songs without downloading something called siblius??

I had some problems with this computer and really do not want to download it. BUT, I love listening to what I got to listen to. Thank You, Charlie and Edie

My grandmother met Carrie Jacobs Bond and corresponded with her over her life. Interesting story. She wrote "The End of a Perfect Day" in the Mission Inn in Riverside, California, near where I live.
