Eric Stewart recently attended an apple cider making session that was held at Central, by the Keweenaw County Historical Society. It all began with picking the apples of course and in Eric's first photo, that crate of apples was just enough to make two gallons of fresh apple cider. The volunteers used two different cider presses, one antique (the second photo) and a newer style grinder/press (the third photo) to mash the apples (shown in the bottom photo), extracting the delicious sweet cider juice. Eric must not have stuck around long enough to taste a sample, since he didn't have a shot of the finished product, but I found one from a few years back, in Ashley Byykkonen's Pasty Gallery Album that shows the fresh juice all bottled and ready to drink. With the chill in the air lately, I'm thinking a nice warm cup of fresh apple cider sounds pretty good right about now.

Apple cider, apple pie, apple crisp, apple butter, caramel apples, does a body good!

There is a cider mill just around a mile from my home. The wife and I will drive out of our way to avoid the very large traffic mess. The cider press in the pictures above, are just the right size. The cider mill in question is powered by water and is very large and has been in operation for almost a hundred years. So a lot of so called city folk come out to the country. 25 years aso this was country, but now it is just the suburbs.I still enjoy going to the mill and getting a half-gallon of fresh cider and some donuts.

dean drove me by the ol' cider mill when calumet was down playing against cranbrook in 07.i was amazed at how much the city had grown around the mill, since seeing it when i was a young boy. good morning cousin dean and susie,and everyone have a good day.

Actually, I did take one gallon home. It was very tasty, indeed! I guess I was more "focused" on the cider than on photography at that point.

My grandaddy had an antique press, however it wasn't an 'antique' in his day.;) I've always liked apples but never acquired a taste for cider, nor any other fruit juice for that matter.

That is something we need here in the UP is a cider mill. I am originally from downstate and I miss them. The wonderful warm donuts and cider.

Is the cider mill you are talking about in Rochester Hills or Rochester? we use to go out there when we were kids. As you said, a lot of changes there. I do not know if you can mention the cider mill, it would be blocked out. If it is the same place, do you remember when it flooded? I have movies of that. You could not see the parking lot because it was a lake. You could not tell where the Clinton River ended and the land started. It was something else.

Oh Yeah! the traffic did create a mess ;O(

What happens to the mash? Guess it would be good compost or animal food....

I remember buying the most wonderful old-fashioned varieties of apples in the UP, and that was in the late 60s. Wonder what varieties are old-fashioned now?

What a great surprise to see the photos of Cider Making at Central. There were actually three presses: Bruce Beaudoin from the Wood'n Spoon brought his newer one and Jim Brooks brought his as well. Over 60 people came on a cold windy day for the event. We hope to do it again next year if we can keep the deer hunters from taking all the Central Apples for bait piles.

This is the time of year I miss gathering around the t.v. and turning off all the lights, get the room as dark as you can get it and turn on Sir Graves Ghastly. They just do not make them like that anymore.

My mom had this record for Halloween and she would get the dining room dark and put this record on. I am telling you, as a kid it use to scare the, whatever and everything else, out of me. She left the light on in the kitchen if we wanted to run in there..My mom did all kinds of stuff for Halloween and Christmas when we were kids.
