I sure hope Bob Gilreath was careful when he snapped today's first shot, as it looks like he was standing right smack in the middle of Sheldon Avenue, in downtown Houghton. This may be the first photograph I've seen of this street, since they removed the elevated crosswalks awhile back. Sure makes the road seem longer and off in the distance there's still a touch of color in the trees.
Bob's second shot was taken from a safer perspective as he captured the Ripley Ski Hill chairlift, sitting idly by, while the fall colors fade. You know that hill is just pining away for some of that white gold to cover it's hills and valleys. Myself, I'd be content if that didn't happen for another month or two!

Are you kidding?? If a car did hit Bob, it would be the car sufferring the damage..... ;-)

Nice but busy-looking little town. Capt. Paul, may we assume you know Bob....and Bob knows you! ;)

Thanks for the photos! I always loved going through Houghton, because I know that when I cross over the bridge I am truly home-lived in Hancock and Calumet for many years. Majority of my family and friends still live north of the Houghton-Hancock Bridge. I especially enjoy my many favorite restaurants in Houghton though!

I was standing in the parking lot at the end of the street, that 250 zoom lens is sweet isnt it ;-)
The second shot is from the houghton lake front path, ooting across the portage with the same lens ;-)
And yes Paul and I go way back ;-)

I feel like i went to Heaven since i been able to see many of the pictures here on pasty with my own eyes every day living in Lake Linden now since i moved back this May.! There is no place like home. I no longer feel homesick when i click here on pasty. Oh what a good feeling to have that sickness be gone!!

Good pics. A chairlift named Ripley, huh? Believe it or not.

Happy for you David Hiltunen. This place tends to make you appreciate the simple life; fresh air, blue skies, lots of space and the best of all, Gitchee Gumee. Glad you are "home".

David, that's nice that you're 'back home' once again, happy for ya! But don't you miss the hills of ol' Tennessee? ;-) (asked by a misplaced southern belle);D

Ugh!! Long day at work; I just got home...
Indeed they are, Greta!! I have both a 200mm and 300mm zoom and they are both awesome. Just watch out for shake as the longer the zoom (or focal length in general), the more chance for blurry pics.
But I'm still curious as to how one "oots" across the Portage..... and does it have to be frozen to safely do so?? J

Capt. Paul, Awesome focal length!! I'd depend on my tripod when handy. Does image stabilizer help at all at such length??

Looking here on pasty when i was up in them hills, & yes i do miss them, was like a pain killer. Being back home is the cure & coming here each day to look is just a little maintenance, like a great adjustment from a chiropractor.

Great pictures! That's an impressive zoom lens, to take a picture like #2. Looks like you're right there.
David, I really identify with the homesickness you felt; I feel it, too. I hope some day to alleviate it the way you did. Good for you!

Capt. Paul -- I would think that some one like you, with your scientific background would understand the science of "ooting". Basicly, ou tart at the op of the ill and un real ast to the ottom and when ou get to the edge ou ump as ard as ou can and this oots ou to the other ide.
Oh --- and kudo's to Bob Gilreath on these great pictures today! Good eye Bob! You really know how to frame and oot a great picture!
