Yesterday Edie and I drove from Marquette to Eagle River, on the last leg of a two-week trip that allowed us to see quite a bit of the U.P., on our way out west and back. Passing through Baraga County, we went just south of the location of this 1905 Shoebox Memory. Olof Been is the buggy driver - and while the lady is not identified - we do know the horses are named Tom and Freddie. They are crossing the Slate River near Skanee, a town founded by Olof's father Walfred Been, a Swedish sea captain who sailed his vessel into Huron Bay in the 1860's. Perhaps Olof and his lady friend are out for a Sunday afternoon ride on a day like today, when we still have favorable fall conditions (though the color show is winding down).
Our thanks to the U.P. Digitization Center, and in particular the Arvon Township Historical Society for their efforts to preserve these U.P. memories.
By the way, there are only two weeks left in the grant-challenge for Copper Harbor's Ambulance Garage project. Hope you will consider adding your support, which only takes a few mouse clicks.
That's pretty funny...they got the name of the gentleman and the two horses, but not the lady. Could we get away with that today without hearing about it?
