There's still fall color here in the Keweenaw, some areas just past peak, others still sporting a variety of hues, but today's Pasty Camists, Eric Stewart and Rob Wetton found some bonus colors to share. Eric's shot shows us a Bete Grise rainbow that looks like it's coming right out of the clouds on the left and spanning right over and into Lake Superior...our U.P. pot of gold. Then Rob captured a rainbow arcing over Houghton. He's looking toward the Bakery Outlet that recently closed, on the M-26 business corridor. That's quite the ominous looking sky in the background, too. Yes indeed, the Keweenaw is colored from top to bottom this time of year!

Bete Grise - my favorite place to swim! Nice pictures!

This "Bete Gris" is a name I have heard pronounced a few ways and and have heard a few translations. How do the locals say and describe the name?

Maybe it's just my eyes, but I seem to see a very faint second rainbow in the area above the power pole in Rob's photo. Rainbows are fascinating!

My yooper folks say "bay-tee gree"

Bay dee gray is what we said for Bete Gris.

Was at Bete Grise this past weekend, was nice enough to go swiming, colors were fantastic!

Shirley it's not just your eyes, there is always a second rainbow. The first or brightest one is the light reflected off of the front of the rain drop, there is always a second one from the light reflected off of the back of the rain drop. Most times you can not see the second one or I have found if you do see it, it will not show up on a picture.

Bete Grise (from the French: Bęte Gris = Grey Beast), pronounced "Bay Degree" (run-on).

No, it's not "Beet Grease", although it has been suggested that was called that, according to some book, the title and author of which don't come to mind just now. (Still on my first cuppa kahvi!)

Pronunciation of Bete Gris? I guess I'm a local since I've had
ownership in a cottage here since 1949. My neighbors and I have
always pronounced it "Bay Degree."
The French pronunciation would be "Bet da gree". The meaning is
gray beast, referring to the fury of the lake when it is whipped up
by a storm. (Bete Gris: a male beast—Bete Grise a female beast.)
The current road sign "Bete de Grise" puzzles me.

Beautiful day in the neighborhood;O)

In a couple books I read years ago, it was called Beet Grease bay. :o) Honest. But like above, we always called it "Bay Degree". Sort of a French pronounciation. On the second rainbow, the one lighter in color is reversed from the brighter one. Other side of the rain drop?

FrNash was right. The more I thought about it, I knew I shouldn't have added the "z". It's Bay Degree!!
