By the looks of the roads in these two photos from Joe Kirkish, it's a beautiful time of year to be out and about. The fall color season is short, so be sure to get out there and enjoy the various hues while you can. Take a bus, drive a car, hop on a motorcycle, grab a bike and start pedaling or just get out there on foot and enjoy all that the Upper Peninsula has to offer. Just think of it as cheap entertainment and treat your senses to the beauty of fall.

Check out more U.P. Autumn beauty in the current issue of The Saturday Evening Post, which includes some pictures from the Pasty Cam! Congratulations to Brenda Leigh, Joel Feenstra, the late Dan Urbanski, and others whose visual artistry make the colors come alive.

Nice...I would call the first photo “The Enchanted Forest”.

Just love that foggy first picture!

Thanks for the color trip as we have no leaf color yet down here in GA.

By Joy Brewer (Joy) on Friday, October 1, 2010 - 10:54 am:

Thanks Joe for the beautiful pictures of home! My recent trip back home went by too quickly; I wish I could have stayed longer, but had to come back to work. Fall in the UP has always been my favorite time of year. My two sons really loved it too when they were living there! I remember my oldest would always faithfully volunteer to rake the leaves just to create a huge pile for one of his and his little brother’s favorite fall activity-jumping into the pile. One time all the neighborhood boys decided to see how big a pile they could create-our block got cleaned so quickly, but boy was there a huge pile of leaves on the street. Clean fun! I wonder how many kids do that now.

Wow...FABULOUS stuff Joe!!!

Well, we didn't get our ambulance barn last month, but we have another chance. We came up this morning in second place, which must mean you're all still voting. If not, please continue to help!

Thanks to all of you, we WILL do this thing!

I wonder if Joe was out last Sunday, which was just like the first picture. It seemed like everybody in the Keweenaw was out for a Sunday drive!

That's a great article and spread of photos in the Saturday Evening Post. Tourism is among the few remaining industries in the U.P. I sure would like to see it presented more in national magazines like this. IMO, it's one of the best vacation places in the country, and yet most people outside of the Midwest seem clueless about it.

BTW, gorgeous pictures today. Thanks for taking them (Joe) and posting them (Mary and Charlie).

Vote cast...this month for sure!

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Friday, October 1, 2010 - 01:23 pm:

What nice photos! I especially like the first one. Autumn is my favourite season, when the trees take on their most colourful mantle, when storms swirl the Lake into a maelstrom of deep blue and whitecaps, and when that first fresh nip of frost can be felt in the air. I miss the Keweenaw the most during Autumn.

By Peter Ouillette (Peterouillette) on Friday, October 1, 2010 - 01:38 pm:

This is one I would hang on the wall, nice and big. Thanks for sharing it.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Friday, October 1, 2010 - 02:37 pm:

Beautiful Autumn colors!

By Wes Scott (Travelnorth) on Friday, October 1, 2010 - 02:42 pm:

I hope somebody sends in a photo of the covered road at peak color on the way into Copper Harbor! That really is a gem. I drove thru there
about three weeks ago and wish I was there for the peak color. Or better yet a ride up the ski hill on the chair lift for color views. Mt. Bomemia? Is that it?? Lac Labelle area??

Pilgrim and Paradise...
The second photo is on Pilgrim Rd looking acrosss the Pilgrim River Valley over to Paradise Rd. I deliver mail on Saturdays to that mailbox.
The view of Baraga County from Paradise Rd the other day was surreal. There were so many different fall colors in the Baraga hills diffused by distance that it was like a great painting by one of the great masters. Well, I guess it was, wasn't it.....

Jim (Keweenawpress):
"The second photo is on Pilgrim Rd looking acrosss the Pilgrim River Valley over to Paradise Rd."

Thanks for clearing that up, Jim.

I just knew that view looked familiar, but not quite from that perspective. For all the times I've driven Paradise Road, I usually avoided Pilgrim Road, taking Paradise Road to Hurontown & Houghton instead, or even more frequently Paradise Road, Boundary Road, Superior Road and Green Acres Road to M-26.

It's pictures like this that almost make me regret selling my house in Chassell this year! <sigh!>

Very,very beautiful photos.

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, October 1, 2010 - 09:37 pm:

Oh Jim...you took my breath away with that statement:

"There were so many different fall colors in the Baraga hills diffused by distance that it was like a great painting by one of the great masters. Well, I guess it was, wasn't it....."

Amen my friend, and He truly does some stunning works!

Oh my!! What a sight! Makes me so sad that I can't get up there for Columbus Day weekend this year. I love going up there that weekend, though it seems I'd be late for the peak of the color. That never matters to me. I just like getting up there to see it. May have to settle for a trip up to Duluth. Though they've probably peaked already too.

Thanks for the gorgeous shots!!

Great photos. All the years growing up in the UP, I took those scenes for granted. Now, living in Arizona I really miss the Fall season. Going to hockey practice, bird hunting, putting the motorcycle away and getting the snowmobile ready, seeing the leaves change..... Thanks for sharing the photos.
