That would be the Copper Country Vacationist League!

We honor an NMU alumni who gave his life for America this week. Our sympathy and respect to his family:

Staff Sgt. Matt West, 36, a Gaylord High School (GHS) graduate from the Class of 1992, was killed Monday in Afghanistan.

West’s sister, Kristine Willis, from Levering, said the family received notification of her brother’s death Monday from the Department of Defense but did not have any details how West had died. She said he had been deployed to Afghanistan in July.

Willis’ husband, Roger, said this was West’s second deployment to Afghanistan and he had served one tour of duty in Iraq. Roger said after graduating from GHS, his brother-in-law attended Northern Michigan University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1997.

My heart goes out to Sgt. West's family. And his friends. I so dreaded that possibility while my own grandson's served over there. The good Lord be with you and I grieve with you.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Sgt.West's family! And to all the families who have loved ones in Afganistan and Iraq.

Rest in peace Matt, and God bless you.

My sympathy also goes out to Sgt. West's family. You have to be proud of your son & brother for giving up his life for his country. It's so sad seeing so many young men losing their lives over there. We lost my cousin during the Viet Nam war so we know a little bit of what you'r going through now. Our prayers & thoughts go out to all of your family. I was one of the lucky ones that had my husband come back home safe & sound.
