There's no mistaking it anymore, Fall is here and it doesn't last long enough, so make sure you slow down the hurried rat-race and take time to check out the ever-changing leaves. You don't really have to go far, just down the street, like Justin Klenk did, but be sure you watch for those "Children at play." Maybe we should posts signs for this time of year that say, "SLOW, Leaves are a'changing," just to remind everyone to enjoy what is right here in front of us. Before you know it, the color will be gone and replaced on the Ripley hillside in Justin's second photo, by that white stuff. Yes, indeed, let's go SLOW.

Beautiful pictures of the colors up there!!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 - 08:39 am:

Are there corn fields UP in the U.P.? Fresh combined picked corn fields have an awesome falltime aroma about them. I miss those harvest days doing that on the farm when dad was alive!

By Tom (Tom) on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 - 09:59 am:

This may seem foreign to many of you but--------
one of the invigorating smells was the freshly turned earth when harvesting potatoes in the UP.
As kids we "quit" school for a week or two working
at picking potatoes and bagging them. We would get
paid all of 7 or 8 cents a bushel. Really lucky
if you got 10 cents. Then the blowout after the
fields are all picked was fun. Hot dogs, ice cream, pop, all you could eat. We ate that outside at some nice place on the farm. I used to work
for the Johnson Bros near the airport. We affectionately called Mr. William Johnson "Old Man Johnson" but not to his face. When I was just
about old enough to be a loader some of us boys
worked with him. He would talk to us about being
sure to get an education; don't quit school.
Kids from all over the Copper Country did this kind of work. Older people too, of course.

The remark was made the other day about how much prettier and more colorful autumn in Michigan is, compared to New England. I came to that conclusion in the late 1970s. Having seen both, I was amazed at how much prettier Michigan's colors are than Vermont/Connecticut/New York/etc. Sure would love to see the UP this year....so many trees and the grass have dried up down here in southern Ohio, from lack of late summer rains. Does not look very promising so far.:(

I just returned from visiting the Copper Country, and the colors in the Houghton County are absolutely beautiful. I would strongly urge any of you to go home and see them. Have a wonderful autumn day everyone.

I was up there the last week in august first week in september and the trees were starting to change then. Miss it up there already.

I was looking at Sunday's MODIS images -

http://coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/modis/modis.cgi/modis?region=s&page=1

and I could see that the entire spine of the Keweenaw and the interior of Houghton & Baraga counties is RED!! Autumn is certainly here. No sun today, though.

Please continue to vote for the Copper Harbor Ambulance Barn. With a big push we can do it!

And thanks again for all your help. Pasty People are the best!

Janie T. and Tom, you painted your pictures well...I can 'see' the cornfields and newly turned earth, plus get a whiff of the aroma of both! Thank God for memories!

By Danielle L. Adams (Badkid) on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 - 12:46 pm:

Janie, there is a cornfield maze you can go through even. I know Somero's has one up on airport road. There is another place you can go to but I am not sure how to get there. It is located in Rock, MI and called Hayes Corn Maze... http://www.hayescornmaze.com/ check it out :)

Just gorgous pictures on Pasty Cam this week. I just love fall. I can practically smell the air from here. Wish I could be there!

By Carole (Carole) on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 - 03:05 pm:

I am in Munising this week and the colors up here are gorgeous. Drove on H58 between Munising and Grand Marais yesterday and the colors there were even prettier. H58 is still not opened all the way through, but detoured on Adams Trail and the colors were just as spectacular.

Janie, first, I apologize for telling you to get your butt UP here. I constantly forget that not everyone is retired. So sorry.

As for the corn fields; very few here. More hay fields than corn. Some of the corn fields are actually sweet corn fields, best sweet corn ever.

Turning over the soil here, like Tom said, is the best aroma in the world. It's hard to explain but it sure would make a great room deodorizer.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 - 04:10 pm:

Hey I'll tell ya...that thing called a job interferes a lot of our fun! lol! Someday retirement will come for us then look out! I wonder if there was enough or not growing season for corn UP there?

By Yooperguide (Huntandfish) on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 - 04:46 pm:

I'll be looking out for you someday, Janie.

Don't think it's the growing season for field corn up here, think it's lack of money. A lot of free range beef, pork and chicken up here. The cattle are left to roam all winter long in the fields and love it. They find protection in the trees, less snow and warmer. They're fed with the hay harvested during the summer. During summer, they graze on the barley fields and whatever else is growing in the fields. Free range is a lot different than grain fed, it's very lean and a bit on the chewy side but the flavor is great.

Be it Autumn, Fresh Tilled Soil, or Fresh Cut Corn...whatever...it's that smell of Mother EARTH...

Smile. It's wonderful stuff!
