We have had some amazing wind lately here in the U.P. It has moved around some of our Pasty.NET broadband antennas that serve remote neighborhoods, like the one on Sand Hills Lighthouse that was entirely ripped off a couple of weeks ago.

Long before the Internet - back in the Fall of 1966 - the wind took down the whole screen at Lakes Drive-in, a popular destination in its day, just north of Lake Linden. Carl Kiilunen shares the Shoebox Memory, and Google Earth helps pinpoint the location of the damage. Though the Drive-in Theatre closed many years ago, you can still see the rows where the cars used to park and connect the speaker through their window. Wonder if any Pasty Cam visitors remember those days?

It's the final week of voting for funding Copper Harbor's Ambulance Garage Project, so get on-board and vote early and often! Also, we hope to see some of you this evening up at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge, at the annual dinner for the Keweenaw County Historical Society.

Saw many movies at the Lakes as a kid. My Uncle was part owner at one time.

I never went to the Lakes, but spent many nights at the Hiawatha in Chassell. Too many stories that never need to be repeated from those days :)

There were a coupole of old speakers still hanging ...if they could tell some stories, it would be a great movie.

That, too, is just pretty much overgrown and gone. You can see the old sign and the ticket booth. I took a walk around last summmer to get some final pictures beofre it is turned into a subdivision.

High winds also took down part of the screen in the late 70`s or early eighties. Don`t remember the exact date. I don`t know what year the theater closed but I saw "The Deerhunter" there, which was released in 1978 so it was still open then.

My wife and I own the property behind the theater back on that squiggly line that is the Traprock River, so we've driven past the remains of the theater may times. Always wondered what it looked like back in the day.

my dad, lauren perkola's twin sister gloria and her husband art hamel owned the theater when i was young. worked there for a time!, makeing 1.75 in the concession stand and 2.00 an hr. helping uncle art mow the lawn and some upkeep on the property. they also owned the totem pole restaurnt, and the yamaha shop next to the drive in. i believe they ran the peoples theater in laurium. maybe managed the calumet theater?

I worked for Gloria and Art Hamel at both the Lakes Drive-In theater and the Totem Pole restaurant when I was in high school back in the early 70's. Good people to work for, they watched out for us high school girls. When the movie MASH first came out, a friend of mine (Barb) and I brought lawn chairs and sat outside after work to watch it (neither of us had a car!). Good times!

I remember the Lakes very well. (Was just a kid back then.) What year did it finally close?

THAT '57 CHEVY UNDER THE LAKES SIGN HAD TO BE A NEW CAR WHEN THAT DAMAGE TOOK PLACE.

The good old days. Didn't have the golden opportunity to go to the drive-ins in the UP but sure remember how much fun they were.

We used to let our friends climb into the car trunk, just for a freebie. Loved the intermission when the hot dogs, hamburgers and popcorn used to dance across the screen.

Don't really remember watching the movies but, that was the fun of it. That was when life was simple.

Hey Mary...I worked for Art and Gloria at the Totempole Restaurant and the Lake's Drive In too.

Art and Gloria were wonderful folks. Met alot of their relatives at the Totempole Restaurant too...everyone was great!

Went to the Lakes in the late 50s, but went more to the Hiawatha in Chassell, though. Am I THAT old? :o)
