This little critter was spotted by John Dodge and his wife, in the Eagle River, just the other night. He said it was flitting to and fro, sipping nectar from the flowers on their hosta plants. After doing a little research, John came up with a name for this large moth...White-lined Sphinx Moth, commonly referred to as a Hummingbird Moth, due to the resemblance to a Hummingbird in appearance when it's flying around. Size is similar, also, about two inches long, not including the long "tongue" you can see protruding into the flowers. There's always something interesting in the outdoors UP North.

saw these a few years ago in the UP and found them very interesting to watch. Move a lot like the bird. I don't think you can hear them hum like the bird though.

We enjoyed the sight of several of these moths at The Berry Patch in Copper Harbor while eating ice cream in the evening a few years ago. The owners have potted flowers around and that attracted the moths much to everyone's delight. They make standard issue moths and butterflies look as though they fly in slow motion!

I saw this moth while sitting on the porch of the Bella Vista motel in Copper Harbor last month. Great Pictures Today.

I can't believe how fast we are approaching a winning score and the #1 ranking in the country. I had doubts early on, but I am sure now that we can pull this off and take home the top prize. Please vote today and every day. Thanks.
Used to see these fairly often around the Berry Patch and at the King Copper Motel. I wonder if they're attracted to the lights, as moths are, and the flowers that are lit up in them, such as the flowers around the Berry Patch windows and the King Copper office windows in the evenings. That seems to be when I've seen them. One even buzzed around the flower print clothing of a friend - funny sight! Well, for the rest of us, anyway. ;D

I got some pics of one here in Baraga...it hung around for awhile..getting nectar out of the later blooming flowers..I had a blue rainjacket on one day and it kept trying to sip it! LOL...way cool moth.
So...do you have an ambulance in Copper Harbor? How about EMT's living there? How's it all gonna come together...I'm interested in hearing that part....and I'm voting everyday too!

Gorgeous! My great-grandfather was an avid collector of moths and butterflies. I never saw one of these growing up in the UP - I wonder how many Sherman collected. thanks!
