Burning wood here in the U.P. keeps a body plenty warm and more than just once. You sweat cutting the wood, hauling the wood, piling the wood, stacking the wood in the basement, loading the furnace and then when all that's left is a pan of ashes, you handle the wood once more. Patty Rheault captured some scenes during their family wood cutting bee recently. The little guy is sure a cutie...it won't be long and he'll be the one running that wood splitter, I'm sure.

A damp dawn to start the day!

Now THAT doesn't look like a lot of fun in the rainy weather! But I think the little guys' enjoying it tremendously!!

What is the power source there? An old Farmall?, International? McCormick? Love old farm tractors!

Oh gosh does that bring back childhood memories..... Every summer, going out cutting wood with the chainsaw, loading 8 ft. lengths of logs into the old 1 ton Dodge until the springs just touched the overloads, hauling them back and dumping them into the yard where they were sawed to length by an old Waukesha powered buzzsaw, then split either by hand or with a hydraulic splitter and piled.

I agree with Mary; you definitely stay warm throughout the process, and it's good exercise too!!!

Not much heat in a hydraulic handle. Now the rest of the process.... thats a different story.

Is the little dude sitting on the pto shaft?

An old friend of mine (Jack-Of-All-Trades) used a Volkswagen engine as a power source for a log splitter that he built himself. He also rigged it with linkage that converted it to a circular blade saw for cutting the tree trunks into smaller pieces so they could be split.
Rest in peace, Walt. I know your upgrading the pearly gates right now.

Looks more like the hydraulic cylinder to me, Janie.

Looks to me that he's sitting on the hydraulic ram casing, the splitter looks like it is running off the tractor hydraulics. I doubt there are any moving parts in reach of the child. The pto wouldn't even be used unless the splitter has its own pump and reservoir. I think the situation is more controlled than with a man swinging a maul/axe/manual splitter. Pieces fly uncontrolled then.

Unfortunately, many of these money giveaways now require one to register on either Facebook, or to have a Twiitter setup, neither of which I am interested in getting involved with.

Oh what found memories - the snarl of the Homelite, the whine of the buzz rig, the smell of fresh sawdust and the thud of the splitting maul on a chunk of wood. We had a buzz saw that was mounted on a Ford tractor. Belt driven from the power take off. I enjoyed it all and now wax nostalgic.

I must add that the term 'making wood" seems to be unique to the UP. I remember using the term and getting a strange look and a chuckle from country boys in Missouri. They say "cuttin" or "puttin up" wood. When I pointed out their terms were unusual, we all got quite a giggle out of it..

Okay, Pasty Power People, here's the situation. We have achieved a ranking nationally in the 70s and we seem to be dropping at about ten spots every two days. We can be #$1 in the country if you don't give up. Please vote early and often. Thanks.

Sad that these "giveaways", always have a catch. I tried but didn't think it was necessary to give away my personal information. Sorry. The Ontonagon playground "giveaway" didn't require any of that. Another scam???

You don't really have to give away your personal information, other than a valid email address. For your first and last names, you just have to type in two letters for each of them. For your birth date, it doesn't really have to be related to your real birthday. You get the picture. No, it's not a scam. And no, you don't have to give them your real information, other than a valid email address. (I learned these tricks from the folks on the old Tech TV, fyi.)

Uncle Chuck, you don't have to join FaceBook or Twitter, or the like. I never have, and I never intend to. I have voted every day for the Copper Harbor ambulance barn. We can do it!

I agree with Marianne...all you give them is your email and I have not been flooded with any additional spam. As far as personal information, they think that I am a 165 year old woman :)

Also, it is a little more effort to vote each day, but if it helps my friends in CC, it's worth it.

When they ran the info in Houghton & Marquette for the animal shelter it really helped! Looks like you can be in the top 2 to get the funding at that level.

Virtually all the winners last cycle were for something involved in the Gulf region ~ time for the North to get a piece of the pie!

I know it's not the "last day of the month", but...on the Young and the Restless today, Katherine Chancellor spoke at her grandson's funeral, and her quote is:

I know it's just a soap opera, but that quote brought tears to my eyes. It was very moving!

Have to say i haven't gotten any spam since registering in the last round, and i didn't say i was female & 165!!

Jbuck, there was a story yesterday afternoon about it on the wluctv6 website, so I assume they broadcast it on the news last night. Now, if the Daily Mining Gazette will just pick up the story! :-)

We were in 70th place this morning when I voted. Come on, you all, come out and vote, please! When I started voting, we were in something like 125th place. :-)

Uncle Chuck...way to go! Now, I am off to the auto parts store to buy a locking gas cap :)

COPPER HARBOR -- Copper Harbor is a beautiful place to live or visit but its remoteness can complicate an emergency response.

The village has taken steps to secure an ambulance service but they can't finalize anything until they have a heated building to store the vehicle.

They're competing in this month's Pepsi Refresh challenge for $250,000 which would be used to build a heated garage and they need your votes to win.

"We have a wonderful first response team with EMTs and paramedics that live right here in town and this would mean they could roll within minutes. That could make the difference between life and death for somebody," said Staci Gibson of the C.H. Improvement Association.

People can use e-mail, text, Facebook and Twitter to vote each day from now until the end of the month.
