E. Neil Harri just happened to be returning from a flight the day that Ed Schneiderhan was taking his first solo flight at the Houghton County Memorial Airport. Ed just happens to be the brother of one of our "behind the scenes" Pasty.Net workers, John Schneiderhan, so Neil figured he'd snap a few shots to share with us all.
Ed's flight instructor is Mike Roth from Baraga, congratulating him with a handshake in the bottom photo. That's Mike's Cessna 152 behind them, which Ed made this first flight alone in. According to Neil though, Ed is busy building an airplane, so he'll be able to fly the friendly Keweenaw skies on his own more often. Congrats to Ed on his successful first solo flight!

Just a reminder: Take some time today to reflect and remember those that lost their lives 9 years ago today in the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Fly your flag in their memory.

God Bless America! I remember exactly where I was when the news came over the radio. I was listening to Bob and Tom. They spent quite a time explaning it was not one of their joking stories, that the news was real and tragic.

The murder of 3130 innocent people by Muslim terrorist's in the name of Allah should never be forgotten.......... I wonder how many Muslim's today will condem those atrocities....FJL

Amen, Theresa. God bless all of those killed on 9/11/2001 and all of those who were injured! I will never forget where I was that morning, watching the morning news shows. Immediately after the first plane hit, I called my brother in Montana, and woke him up to tell him to watch the news. Together we watched the events in horror!

Maybe Ed can show us some progress photo of his airplane or when it is complete will be fun to. You can sure see by the smiles that the two gentleman had good day.

FJL, I totally share your sentiments. From what I'm hearing in the news lately, the words of Horace Mann have come to mind often. "Those who cry appease, appease, are hanged by those they tried to please!"

That is a great set of photos to show today. It shows that General Aviation is alive and well in America. It is one of out unique freedoms.We are one of the few countries in the world today that can enjoy flying without gov't or cost prohibitive, restrictions.
On 9/11/01. I flew to a pilot meeting in Gaylord. We landed in time to see the second tower struck on live TV.We decided we needed to reposition our planes back to our home bases in case we were needed for any missions.
We were in the air about 8-10 minutes when the controller from Minneapolis told all aircraft to land. Pilots were questioning the order and asking about an exception for their particular flight. The controller said, let me make this as clear as possible. If you are in an airplane, anywhere over the continental US, land immediatly at the closest airport.
This was ordered by the President.
I turned back to Gaylord. I can see my flight path on the radar tracings from that day. I make a 180 degree turn back to airport. We had to drive home.

Congrats Ed on your solo flight, while a LL-H high sophomore in 1953 I went skyward on my first flight with instructor Luchasee at Oneco airport. As we were going over Torch Lake he gave it a nice "barrel roll" and then we landed and our great friend, Don Aldredge then started his flight lessons. It was 35 years later that my wife went to work for NORTHWEST AIRLINES and we flew many, many times to Houghton and the west coast to relax in Arizona and Los Angeles to visit our sons and relatives.

"WE SHOULD NEVER, EVER FORGET'. AMEN.

I will never forget 9/11. It will be forever etched in my memory with faces of the people covered in dust running away from the buildings as fast as they could. And the people holding pictures of missing loved ones that were in the Towers or of families whose loved ones were on the planes. Even though I was up at the Shoreline in Eagle Harbor on vacaction the next week, night and day, was spent in front of the TV watching/waiting/praying and crying as this horrible nightmare unfolded.

Two of my stepsons are NYPD officers. One worked there on 9/11. The other came there from uptown a few days later. The stories are really bad from the first couple of days.They lost a lot of comarades in a few hours.
Everyone in NYC seems to know people killed on that day.We attend an annual party out there and you hear all their stories.
The one boy who isn't a police officer, had 6 killed from his highschool class.
There are a lot of health related problems too. The costs are still rising.

I'll never forget the Verizon operator who talked with a man who was a few stories away from one of the impact zones in the World Trade Center. He said there was fire and they couldn't find a way out. She stayed on the line and comforted him and talked to him for a long time. Finally he said: "I........... don't......... think....... we're.......... going........... to........ make........ it......" She tried to talk to him after that thru the open line, but never drew a response. Just one of hundreds of stories of that terrible day.

God bless America, her firefighters and police, and her soldiers all across this world. Prepare us for the days ahead.

I will always remember the morning of 9-11 as well. We were at work, and made tv antennaes out of tin foil and hangers to get enough reception on a really old tv...it worked, and we watched in disbelief.

A Moment of Silence....God Bless.

And I remember calling my cousin...he said he was in the shower when the first tower was hit, and heard the bang of the second one..looked out the window and screamed. The follow up emails, FOR WEEKS, were simply astounding.

I'll never forget the one that said "I heard something today that I've not heard in weeks and months. Laughter...someone was laughing and it sounded so wonderful".....

Thomas, thank you for the link to this powerful tribute ... took me right back to that day which none of us will ever be able to forget ... nor should we ... and we must teach those Americans too young to know or understand what happened in the United States of America on September 11, 2001.
