By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Monday, September 6, 2010 - 07:55 am:
A couple of times in the past several weeks, we've had gale force winds here in the Keweenaw and when that happens, Lake Superior gets quite stirred up and takes awhile to settle back down. The top three photos were snapped by Dave Dalquist, who spotted these brave souls doing some windsurfing, riding the waves and wind to shore. Those waves they're riding at McLain Park, are pretty good size, but the ones captured by Richard Barclay take the cake. The three bottom photos were taken during the storm we endured last week, where there were reports of waves that reached 20 to 25 feet high out in the Big Lake, with even an occasional 30 footer now and then. Sure looks like Richard had himself a ring-side seat to watch the action. By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Monday, September 6, 2010 - 08:31 am: Kind of scary but exciting. Maybe I'll get to see some of this when I'm up there! I always wonder if this was like the Fitzgerald's experence? By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, September 6, 2010 - 08:57 am: Ahem...I wouldn't call the surfers "brave"...another description comes to mind. :} Beautiful action shots, nevertheless! Thanks, Dave and Richard. By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, September 6, 2010 - 08:59 am: Thankyou, thankyou! for posting these pictures of Lake Superior in her wild mood! I heard there has been a lot of wave action and was hoping to see pictures! Great pictures! By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Monday, September 6, 2010 - 11:33 am: If you head over to www.johndee.com John posted some great pictures in his weekly journal. Look on the left side of his page under journal click on the current and check them out. Thanks for everyone for going out in the storm to get the pics, wish we would have been up to get some of our own By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Monday, September 6, 2010 - 11:44 am:
We had planned a trip north for this weekend but strong winds here in Wayne county put our power out for 2 days, but no home damage. Great pics again today and another word for large waves is roiling..Some of us old sailors experienced this action on all 5 of the Great Lakes. By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Monday, September 6, 2010 - 11:53 am: Thanks for these awesome photos! By Sharon I. Smith (Sharons) on Monday, September 6, 2010 - 12:59 pm:
It sure was a good storm, only I wasn't brave enough to go out in the middle of it to take any pictures. By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Monday, September 6, 2010 - 01:23 pm: By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, September 6, 2010 - 05:26 pm:
Positively awesome photos!!! It was kind of like that at Misery Bay when we were there, but not that high. We had a ball in those waves though. I had to keep my 8 year old grandson by me at all times or I'd have lost him. By Updreamin (Updreamin) on Monday, September 6, 2010 - 06:29 pm: We live on M-26 and I tell you it was wild this past weekend. We lost power for about 30 hours or so,the lake was totally awesome!! I want to thank everybody who braved going out and cleaning up the tree's across the roads, we were stopped for a little while from a tree coming across the road coming out of Copper Harbor Saturday evening. |
