Photos from John Kline

Here's a follow up to the pictures of 1920's swimmers at Eagle River beach from John Kline last month. (Be sure to see John's subsequent posting on the bottom of that page.) Today we compare the beach in summer with a unique photo from John that was taken by a photographer way out on the ice. Behind the girls on the swing we see the neighbors, as well as John's family home.

Contrast this with the winter shot, where we see the buildings up on Forth Street and John's home during the snowy season:

I've often said, it is like a different planet here along the Lake Superior shore in the winter, as these pictures illustrate. As we pointed out, today this is the very spot where the Eagle River Inn stands.

Perhaps later this week John Kline can fill us in on the people in these photos. We certainly appreciate him sharing these memories.

In other news, let me send out a Happy Birthday to our first grand daughter Kira Howard, born two years ago today. Her mom grew up here in Eagle River, and was blessed with a second daughter this past May, Kira's new sister Kit.

Can you get a shot from these perspectives today? (maybe from a boat out in the water)

"Happy Birthday"-Kira, I also would like to wish my grand-son Alexander Maximillion Schwartz, and my great-grand-daughter Charley Neveah Andrews, a "Happy Birthday". Both born on this day , Alex is 2 years old and Charley is 1. Here is a twist Alex is Charley's uncle.

Iwould like to ask the help of all Pasty Cammers for a project the Copper Harbor Improvement Association has started. Here is the email we received:

Hi,

Copper Harbor is in the running for a $250K grant from Pepsi Refresh. This is a voting grant. The 2 projects with the most votes September 30th will receive $250,000. Our project is to build an ambulance barn to house an ambulance available to us to help cut down emergency transport times. Currently the closest ambulance is 45 minutes away. Please help us build a barn for our ambulance! Click on the link below:

http://www.refresheverything.com/copperharborambulancebarn?utm_source=em

I think you can cast additional votes by texting 102689 to Pepsi (73774) and by clicking on the Facebook and Twitter sites also shown on the voting page!

Vote everyday for the month of September! Please also consider sharing this site with your network of friends and family. We could sure use the votes!!

We are really excited!!!

Thanks for your help!!!

Happy Birthday, Kira!!!!

Sharon I would love to help by my vote. But I hate, and don't understand, those awful "words/symbols" given to be repeated. That leaves this old gal out. Sorry. Computer idiot here.

That's just a device to keep "automatons" from voting, by limiting the votes to humans who can recognize and regurgitate those words and symbols, which the automatons can not do! A lot of sites use that technique.

By Martha Kirk (Misschiefie) on Sunday, September 5, 2010 - 07:03 pm:

FRNash, I understand MsKatie's frustration. A lot of sites do use this security procedure, but not like the Pepsi site's. This one doesn't use real words, just partial words or nonsense words or words with punctuation attached to them, and since it's all distorted, it's hard to tell what the letters are because there's no recognizable context. Sometimes I've had to go through two or three refreshes just to find one I could decipher. I've tried the audio version and it's even worse than the image one. I've been voting for an organization downstate that wants to build a spay/neuter clinic for several episodes of this contest (and I will add the ambulance barn as one of my votes), but they sure don't make it easy!

By AJ - WI (Ajinwi) on Sunday, September 5, 2010 - 07:36 pm:

MsKatie: I agree. I can barely read the words.

FRNash: I finally got one I could read and I think I voted. How do I know my vote was validated? Do you get a message "Thank you for voting" or some such message so a person would know their vote went through?

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Sunday, September 5, 2010 - 07:50 pm:

Martha and AJ, thank you for allowing me not to feel totally stupid. If they'd just use words or phrases that were readable. I feel bad that I can't vote. And there THREE phrases at that!

Sorry, I can't help you there, I haven't voted yet!

I guess I'll have to have a go at it!

That sure sounds like overkill to me!

I voted for Copper Harbor, Sharon. I love Copper Harbor. Actually, the security feature for the Pepsi web site is no worse than those I have seen on many web sites. If you miss it, try again. The Pepsi site has one additional feature that is helpful, though, it has an audio feature that will read the letters to you. My eyes are not that great anymore, and the screen on this laptop is not very good, either. I did get it the first time on the Pepsi site, but I often miss the first time or two on other sites. (Oh, I prefer Coke, but I will vote for Copper Harbor when I remember to.)

One important thing on the Pepsi site is that it is case sensitive on the security feature! Go Copper Harbor! And one more thing, you will have to register your name and birth date, BUT, they only require the first two letters of your first and last name, and they can't check your birth date, so you could use a different one, if that bothers you. :-) (I learned those tricks many, many years ago from the Tech TV crew.)

Thanks for that tip, Marianne, it was that "registration" requirement that put me off, but with your suggestion I'll probably go back and register!

The first girl on the swings is my sister Leona, then Frances Gurna (sp?) and on the right a Jarvi girl (Ester or Ida). The couple standing on the frozen shore is my mother and father, Margaret (Raisanen) Kline and John J. Kline. I am the little boy in the picture. My sister, Verona (Bant) Kline ventured out on the ice to take the picture. Verona is 92 years old now and lives in Hancock after living in Eagle River for a long time. John
